Default Odd noise, possibly transmission.

While my car is in neutral, if I let my foot off of the clutch I will hear a SHHHHH sound. It also makes this sound while accelerating in any gear. It is getting much louder.

I also noticed that If I downshift, I hear a winding noise. I hope that I don't have to spend tons of money to fix this.

My passenger axle has fitiment issues and sometimes leaks a little MTF. Would low MTF cause the problems that I am hearing?

I will stick some 10w-30 and see if the noise goes away.

Sounds like your throw out bearing, when was the last time it was changed?

The bearing has never been changed. the engine should have around 50-65k miles and so should the tranny. The oil was a little low. I added some and test drove around the block and the noise is still there.

I have a similar sound when sitting in neutral, has always been there since I bought the car with 59,666 miles, and I'm now over 156k. I have changed my transmission fluid a couple times during those miles, and it is still there. I have actually just been ignoring it, because if I try to listen for it, it seems like it gets louder, when in fact it is the same as it always has been.

I did replace my throw out bearing when I did the clutch at 121k, and regreased that bearing when I rebuilt the motor last summer, and the sound is still there, still the same.

H22A 5 speed.

You can also fill it through the vss vent...take off the plastic vent cap, put a very snug fitting hose on it and on a quart of oil with a squirt top, presto! its slow, but pretty easy

Slow, easy, and not accurate. Very easy to overfill or underfill, that is the main purpose of the filler being on the side of the tranny, to accurately tell you to put more in if it's not running out, or to stop, if it is running out.

oops, left out a step...take out the filler, so when its running out, you know when to stop...thought that part was just common sense, my bad. But I find it much cleaner to go through the vss if you don't have a cool pump to pump it in thorough the filler plug...stupid pumps

hmmm, I called a mechanic and he said that with the problem that I am having, the whole tranny needs to be rebuilt. I think that that is a pile of ****. He said that the problem about the clutch making a noise while my foot is off of the clutch has a big chance of not being the throw bearing. $1200 dollars? WTF most places charge $350 for a throw bearing.

Anyone recommend a mechanic in Los Angeles County,CA, near long beach if possible?

The reason why I am afraid of doing this is that I read my helms manual and it looks like I will have to drop the whole tranny and I don't think that I have the tools to take on that task.

With it being a prelude in a eh2, I don't know if I can do this without having to remove the whole tranny.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Ok it sounds like you have two problems the noise when you let off the pedal in netral is most definetely the one of the input/mainshaft bearings it's a $30-60 part and easy to change. However the howling or whining during decel is the differential more than likely as long as you have oil in it. It is caused by lots of hard driving and the spider gears are wearing out and the diff needs to be reshimmed. This is a pain in the *** as you have to buy lots of shims and play shim changer and backlash setter for a minute or two. The noise will get worse and worse but don't worry it usually won't actually break but it will get embarrassingly loud at some point. Get a lsd now and some new bearings and do it your self at home with some buddys.

damn, If helms is right, it will cost way more because of the tools needed. I'm confident with other things but the transmission seems way to complicated for me to even finish in 2 days. I will probably purchase quaife and have my mechanic replace my old differential along with needed berings.
