how to remove a windshield?
i am thinking about getting an 86 crx project car, and it has a busted windshield. i want to pull one at a junk yard because it will be very cheep. from what i remember from cars of the past it is damn near imposible to pull one without breaking it, how can i do it and get it out in one peace? also is it possible to put one back in myself or should i just have a shop do it?
Just have a shop do it. I watched the "come to your house" auto glass guy do my front windshield, even with the right tools my old glass was cracked like mad when he got it off.
It requires using a bladed device with a handle and pull cord for leverage, then running that along the edge of the entire windshield. This cuts all the silicone/window weld stuff that holds the glass in.
I guess with practice you might somehow get a windshield off cleanly, but I don't think I could ever see myself even attempting it.

In the junk yard i've seen people use fishing lines to slowly saw out the glue around the edges of the windshield. Maybe that would work?</TD></TR></TABLE>

It's not fishing wire that you want to use but piano wire (or a long guitar string).
As for that tool with a "pull cord", there is a photo of one on the web page that I wrote about removing Chevelle windows;

I worked for a small little tinting shop that did glass replacement. We charged about 200-250 for most 2 door cars. Remember, the shop doesnt make the glass.. they order it. So they have to pay for the windsheild itself which usually runs about 110 bucks for 89-91 civics/crxs and then they charge you for about an hour of labor which pays for the rest. The cord tool you saw could be bought from most larger glass shops, Snap-on, and Mac tools trucks. Removing a windshield w/o breaking it requires alot of finesse, so gl with that. And the silicone is about $5-$8 bucks a bottle, and usually windsheild takes about 2-3 bottles. Take all that into consideration when you get a $200 quote from a shop, I myself say thats a steal. Just dont wash it or remove the tape they use to keep it in place for ATLEAST 2 days or the silicone will not cure properly. - Darrell
