Default type R motor, what mods can i do and still be able to pass smog?

i plan on getting a B18C5 swap in about three months and i was just curious what mods could i do to the car and still pass smog? and could i port and polish the head and pass smog? thanks

That depends. Are you willing to swap parts back to stock for emissions testing? If so, you can certainly use a header with a JDM 2.5 inch collector or a cold air intake (the ITR intake - with its carb number - won't easily fit a Civic!). Then you have to more subtle stuff - cams, ECU tuning, headwork, increased displacement, etc. Although a referee WILL check to see that you are running the proper ECU for the motor, your typical smog tech won't. So you could get away with ECU mods provided your car can pass the tailpipe test. Neither a refree nor a typical smog check will check for such things as cams, headwork, increased compression, or increased displacement. With this sort of stuff, if you can pass the tailpipe test, you are okay. Whether or not you will pass the tailpipe test depends on a number of things. Generally, the more mild the cam, the more likely you will pass the tailpipe test. As for headwork, it is difficult to say. I have not heard anything about headwork alone affecting emissions.
