What fluid to use in transmission?
Putting in a DX transmission with 30K on it. It has been sealed in plastic in a warehouse for a few years. After installation, what fluid should I use? I have 10W40 High Mileage Oil in mine now. I was going to use Honda MTF, but is there something better? Redline gear oil, GM Synchromesh, or what? What is the deal with synchromesh anyway? A GM product? What are the advantages over the Honda OEM stuff? I just want the best lubricant in the tranny. Thanks.

Being a fairly new dx tranny you should be fine with 10w30 as it gets older 10w40 I would not use high milage oil in a tranny Honda mtf is prolly the "best" but it must be just like 10w30 oil only honda brand. Gm syncromesh is a fluid GM came out with for some of their manual tranny's but works well with b series cable trannys due to the common third gear grind. Which I must say helped mine 100%

Its funny how the manual says that, if you read the manual for a 1990 crx si it says 10w 30 works fine but if you read a manual for a new civic it says to use Honda mtf or as a temporary solution use 10w 30 but it can cause problems in the long run, so are they telling the truth or just trying to get us to buy there products.

is that from personal experience?
i used redline for two years and about 30K miles, got rid of first gear grind and made shifting more precise.

Yes, its actaully from all the people that have complained to me about there trans. One of the things we ask them is what fluid are you running, and almost all the trans that come in, they use redline.

So I just go to a GM dealer and ask for synchromesh fluid? No special type or anything? Needs what? 2 quarts, right? About how much does that run?

What is the downside to this? Should I drain it immediately and refill? I was told that high mileage could in fact benefit my tranny. What is bad about high mileage oil in a tranny? I use it in my car everyday.

Redline MTL does not damage transmissions, people do. Not even the best mission fluid will prevent damage when you shift like your circuit racing. I bet these people that use redline think that by using redline, there trannies become bullet proof, so they shift like madmen.

I guess I cant really prove a downside to it. It's just that the oil has all kinds of additives in it unless the tranny is old there would be no benefit. Overall is should be alright.

I have never heard of the B&M fluid. Is it a synthetic fluid? Where did you see it? There are really no benefits to a thicker fluid, but i doubt you can tell a diff performance wise between a 80 vs 90 weight gear oil.

Well since I don't drive with the people that complain I can't really tell, but from hear say the people drive normal but just experience premature wear. Do a search there are post where people will tell you the downside to using redline fluid. The only thing I can see as a benefit from using thicker oil is it won't seap threw seals that much but you don't want to go to thick or else the oil won't be able to work properly. As far as the high mileage oil, there is actually an ingredient in there that helps old seals, I'm not sure how good it is to use in the trans though.
