Default apex-i n1 coilovers (99 spec) - what is the maximum spring rates they can handle?

I have these coilovers, and want to order some stiffer rear springs. What is the highest rate springs they can handle (front and rear)?

I don't want to kill the shocks, but I'd like to run in the vicinity of 18k rear, and upwards of 12k front.....

Anyone?

PM CRX Lee He offers free shock dyno's at his place and might have a good wealth of knowledge when it comes to the Apex systems. Good luck.

I highly doubt that the Apexi rear shocks can handle 18K.

Keep us updated Ken!

I think 1000lbs is going to be way too high for autocross...

Someone sent me an IM and said they have spoken to apex-i usa and that 14k is the highest you can go in the rear (I'm assuming he was talking about the 99 spec setup). I believe he said apex-i usa would revalve them for higher rates for a fee as well.....

I guess I'll go with 12k in the rear for starters. You know what? The 99 spec coilovers come with 5k rear springs! How gay is that?!

they come 11/5 because they made for racing, not gay drag

11f and 5r is actually quite good on the R

statements like these need to start and end with "in my humble opinion"

You won't be able to see generally what the spring rate maximum is until you get a shock dyno graph to see what the shock really does functionally and check the adjustment range if they are adjustable. Even at that point there is no way one can specifically say "these are fine up to 500 lbs but not for 550 lbs" as there are way, way too many variables outside spring rate and dyno graphs alone. Feel free to use the search RR/AX if you want more info on the "how much spring will this shock take" question as I have answered it so many times that it isn't worth repeating.

First thing you need is a dyno graph to see generally what ballpark you are in. If it comes with 11k (about 600 lbs) front and 5k (about 300 lbs rear) then I would as a generality guess that the dampers don't make a huge amount of force as I would call those rates in those positions on the low end of the performance range although one can argue spring rates forever.

Most people who have seen my posts (again primarily on RR/AX) know of my lack of love for the real functional capability of most prepackaged kits especially of JDM origin even if they are "revalved for racing". Most are threaded and anodized flash, bling and perception backed up by underwhelming low tech internals. Not saying that these are specifically as I have not seen them on a dyno but most that I have seen are. I do still have a standing offer to dyno dampers JDM and similar kits for free and will pay the return postage if you want to send them to me.

LOL.

Have you ever tried these coilovers? They = understeer city. Period.

They seriously need at least 12k in the rear to prevent plowing like a pig.

*maybe* (and that's a big MAYBE) if you got a 26mm rear swaybar + 225F/ 205R tires, then you might be able to dial out the understeer.

With a little thought, I'll adjust this statement to say that that soft rear spring rate might not be a bad idea if you are drag racing and running wheelie bars set to all but touch the ground at ride height so when the soft rear spring allows the rear weaight transfer, the bars hit the ground and the car instantly gets a longer wheelbase and resists firther transfer.

Beyond that, I would think that the rear rates are rather low for drag racing and I could certainly imagine that it would push like a farm implement (a plow maybe?) when turned. It might ride nicely in the back seat on teh street but would generally not be my choice for hustling the car around.

18kg in the rear? Do you really need it that stiff?
