I'm trying to decide what I want to do as far as ECU upgrades, is 8600 RPM safe for the stock GSR bottom end??

ask yourself this, will your cams still be making power up to that rpm?

pointless, leave it as it is until you build a valvetrain

You should be fine with that valvetrain for an accasional 87-8900 rpm shift. Upgraded rods/rod bolts are always nice but with the valvetrain you have that portion (head) is more than fine.

It would be a good idea to dyno the motor and see where it stops making power and shift there oppsoed to seeking out a number from nothing as a shift point.
