I dont think a d17 tranny will work on a d15.

Ok folks I've done it........ The D17 gearbox bolts directly to the D15B block, so I believe that since this is possible then the D17 should bolt directly to the D16Y8 block also.........

I was wondering if why you used the d17 tranny vs the d16y8 or z6? does it have a shorter gear ratio or simply cause its what you had?

that's the gearbox that I have in my 03 Civic Ex and I have put in the D15B block and it bolted up with no problems whatever. Since the D15B block could bolt to the D17 gearbox then the D17 tranny should also bolt directly to the D16Y8 block as well .....

The gearing on the D15 tranny sucks, but the z6 or y8 trannies are probably cheaper and easier to find.

Is the d17 gearing "better" than the z6-y8's? or "worse"?

I don't see why. Unless the D17 tranny has REALLY shorter gears for more acceleration, you're just wasting your money. Unless you had a 2001+ Civic anc crashed it, then get the D16Y8/D16Z6 tranny.

I think the bigger question here is why did you put a D15 block in an '03 civic? Wouldent it be better to keep a new D17 in there? wtf.....

correct....... however, i know that those d17 motors are black sheep... supposed plastic intake manifold?? vtec-e (economy..) from a performance standpoint, i think that if you had no other option, i would bolt it either a d16z6 or jdm d15b in place of the d17...

just make sure you're not in cali doing this

he didnt swap the entire longblock...just the block....AND I thought I-VTEC (in all the new model cars with VTEC) was VTEC-E inspired.

not quite sure exactly what he swapped.... but i would think its the longblock...

and... the d17 doesn't have i-vtec, its just a plain ol' single cam vtec-e motor...

Ok , I'm sorry for not explaining........
I bought a 03 Civic with the D17 engine in it. (The D17 is not i-VTEC it's almost identical to the D16Y8 but just with a greater stroke on the crank to make more cc..) I took out the complete engine minus gearbox and sent it to crower who is now doing R&D to make a fully built D17 (Rods, pistons, cams, springs, stroker kit etc....) but I will not be gettin it back until Dec.... So what I decided to do since I had a D15B complete engine, I just went ahead and put it in the car in the meantime....... And it fitted 99% perfect

That's pretty cool man, you lending you motor out for R&D. Are you sure that they are going to do a stroker for the D17? Seems like the wrong direction to go on that motor...but it's good to know that the aftermarket isn't forgetting the more common engine in civics.

Thanks for the info on the tranny fitment - opens up possibilities for future transmission options.

Yes, it will bolt to the "D" series block. However, depending on what chassis you are placing the engine/transmission into, the shifting may be a problem and your speedometer/odometer may not work.
