Default Putting stickers on freshly painted car

I finished painting the crx last night. I was hoping to wax the car to protect the paint before putting my class numbers and stickers all over it. However, my next race is July 3rd, so I don't have the usual 1-2 months for the paint to cure before I wax. Does everyone just add stickers without a coat of wax underneath, or should I wait until July 1st to wax and sticker the car?

A few days extra might make a meaningful difference. I'd try to wait.

Wait for it to FULLY cure. I have made the mistake before, and the paint came off when I tried to pull the sticker off a year or so later. It also depends on how well the car was prepped before painting.

Good luck.

I didn't plan far enough in advance to leave 1-2 months for the paint to fully cure, so that is out of the question. I can wait as long as July 1st to put the numbers and class stickers on, but that's as long as I can wait. I guess my question then is should I wax the car on July 1st before I add the stickers, or go waxless?

so you're going to hallet eh jim? i've got that stupid wedding to be in, wish i could go.

i'd wait. there's no real problems you can possibly encounter with putting stickers on or waxing, so waiting until the last minute is no big deal. i'd wait until wed to wax, and put the markings on on thurs.

how'd it come out anyway?

EDIT: wax first for sure. it'll make getting things off the next time easier. not to mention if you ever decide to move things around on the car you won't have portions of paint that are a different shade where the sticker used to be because you didn't wax there.

It turned out pretty good. No self-respecting painter would claim it as his work, but I'm satisfied. Here's a pic, still need to add the pinstripe to separate the colors.

The paint scheme looks familiar.

Are you going to leave the stickers on the car once you put them on? If they are just temporary, or just for this one race then take the stickers and apply them to your shirt/jeans once or twice before putting them on the car. This will take some of the lint from your clothes and make it so the stickers do not hold quite as hard as normal, they will also be easier to pull off after you are done racing for the weekend. Then you can buy some time for the paint to fully cure and wax/apply new stickers

Hope this helps
Good luck

Nice RTR scheme. Have you looked into the possibility of static cling-type vinyl or magnets?

Travis, yep I'll be at Hallett. Too bad you can't come along. Uncleben and I have grand illusions of bringing home 1 and 2 for team honda.

I'd really like to leave the stickers on. I've peeled stickers off the car between races for various reasons this year, and I'm tired of shelling out $10 and $10 there for replacement stickers. Most of the class stickers are pre-printed on vinyl, so static cling or magnets really aren't an option.

What about putting the pre-printed vinyl stickers on magnets?

If there just your number stickers can't you just put them onto your windows? I dont know if theres a rule against having stickers on anything but your doors so maybe this might not be such a good idea.

Under the rules, it is unavoidable to have stickers on the paint. Magnets are not allowed, they will blow off at high speed. Looks like I'll be waiting until the last minute to wax the car and put the stickers on.

I'll take that #1 position, thank you

Nice paint scheme, looks better than I imagined it would! Are you going to do the World Challenge style number/class graphic on the front doors? I want to do that eventually. X-treme put some very simple vinyl numbers on my car today, but man I wish I could paint it before the race, oh well. We're going with the black (unpainted) hood/white body look right now, haha. But I have an interesting graphic scheme that I'll save for you to see in person. Today we got the $0.00 air dam put together... it's uh, interesting, haha, but better than nothing and provides a nice place for the brake ducting if I can get those damn SBMS ducts to fit. I'm seriously starting to wonder if the CRX/hatchback spindle/shock-tower spacing distance is different because I'm still not seeing these things fitting. We got in the ATS 4.7 yesterday too, and they're going to get some replacement tranny parts from Honda ordered tomorrow morning hopefully. I can't wait. See you next Friday

PS: want to do the Texas Honda Challenge event at Hallett in August? Our SCCA licenses should easily transfer to NASA and it'd be fun to run with some more Hondas.

...anyway, back to our regularly scheduled programming regarding stickers on new paint jobs...

Wait as long as possible, and then maybe try some spray wax (safe for fresh paint) before applying the stickers.

Well you are on the horn of a dilemma. For paint to cure it has to "breathe" and waxing prevents that and most definitely so does the vinyl numbers. Paint job looks good.

maybe use some low-adhesive painter's tape to just stick on the vinyl for this first race. afterwards, take them off and let the paint fully cure before permanently applying the vinyl for the next race.
