Speed Racer the Movie

Entertainment trade paper Daily Variety reported that the studio was receptive to Vaughn's vision because it focused on character development and a family story in lieu of potentially costly racing scenes.

Hollywood is incapable making a decent movie, all they know how to do is special effects and blow chit up.

I totally disagree with your "

The reason the first Spiderman movie was so successful was because there was character development... gives meaning to the movie and gives the viewer a means of relating. I'm not sure what you're looking for, but if I only want to see racing footage, I can go to a race, or click on one of many video files H-Ters have been sharing. If I want to see a good movie, character development is key.
Do you think they'll loop the background scenes?

I wonder if they'll punctuate between lines of dialogue.
"Gosh Speed we'll never be able to get the Mach 5 ready in time for the big mountain race and if that happens the Car Cactobatic Team will have every chance of beating us and we can't have that happen because you've got to win the race, Speed!"

Yeah, because you know how the Speed Racer cartoon built is reputation on excellent scenes of pure, accurate, racing animation.

On a kinda related topic, which title episode of "Family Guy" did they do a spoof of Speed Racer (when they were doing the soap box racer I believe)? I've been looking to download that one.
Although we'll now see a total explosion of SpeedRacer stuff if the movie is made. I kinda liked it being an unknown cult show to tell you the truth.

Since I've been thinking quite a while about how cool a RacerX movie would be, I know this is Speed Racer - it's the same family anyway, the over-exposer pales in comparison to finally being able to see a more grown-up development of the characters.
For some reason I remember the characters being deeper and more exciting as a kid. With a possibility of recapturing that depth on the big screen, I'll trade the cult status for a flash-back to childhood.
I hope my expectations aren't too high.

Ha, I too remembered it having a wee bit more depth as well. I have caught a half dozen or so since Speed started reairing them and man, do they suck. I didn't remember the animation of the driving being that silly. Love the comment about punctuation, man that's spot on.

Vin could easily play a bad guy too. He's more of a cartoon than a real actor anyways.
Although, since Speed looks a little like Jeff Gordon, I nominate Gordon to play Speed.

The thing I haven't heard anyone talking about is what the setting is going to be... when and/or where?
Will it be in the late 60's?... cars might be pretty close to what the cartoon depicted
Or will it be present-day or future?... If so I think the ALMS/Prototype cars would be a great source of inspiration.

It should be present day with Speed's Car being the new Ford GT. Freakin Sick! As for Speed himself, I can picture Iceman from Xmen2 to play him. Of course he'd have to dye his hair. He is skinny and has that "looK" to him.
Come on let me know who everyone thinks should play the cast!!!
