New S2k and Honda's "break in oil??"
Ok, as many of you know my Grandma picked up an S2k ('03) about a month ago.
The dealer told us that for the first oil change (which is free, according to them) wouldn't be done until something to the tune of 4000-5000 miles (I can't recall the exact mileage.)
Soo, I stopped by on the way home from work and they confirmed it was ~4700miles, when I questioned them why they stated it is "break in oil" and a different weight than the standard oil used.
What do you guys think of this, it sounds a wee bit strange to me seeing as I have never heard of this before especially to drag it out for the extended mileage?? Did any of you hear or deal w/this "break-in" oil?
I would rather do it myself instead of hand it over to the g00bs there...
I had another question about what weight to run in the S. In my R and Lude I run amsoil 5w-30 and I have a wholesale deal w/them so I have quite the stockpile here, would this be sufficent to run in the S?
Thanks for the help

When you get a new S - check your oil levels once every or every other fill up. Watch it religiously! When it comes down to the first oil change, just use conventional oil. Once you do that, around 7500 miles, swap to synthetic. All should be well.
Read up on S2ki for proper break-in procedures and what new owners should look out for and watch. They should be downloadable PDF files IIRC.

Thanks for the advice, so what is the weight/viscosity you would reccomend?

If you search in the forums at http://www.bobistheoilguy.com, there was an oil analysis done of this break in oil and it does appear to be a special blend. As for oil, you might want to try om-30 german made castrol syntec. It is a thick 30w, the only fully synthetic syntec sold in stores, and can only be found at autozone i believe. Make sure to spot the made in germany on the back label.
you'll be fine running the 5w30 that you have even though the recommended oil is a 10w30. I changed my oil to synthetic at 4k miles, no adverse affects and noticed the engine stopped burning oil (1 quart every 4k miles) at around 15k miles that included a few auto-x and track events. Just drive the car normally, no need to baby it but no need to abuse it either. I would not go past 4k miles on the first oil change. The fear of the rings not seating is not a problem if the car is driven normally.
The breakin oil that comes in the S2000 has high levels of moly. You should use regular dino oil till about 10k miles or whenever oil consumpion decreases (which for me was around 12k (with 30+ autoX and several HPDE thrown in for good measure). If you want to change oil sooner, use a 10w-30 and add a moly additive to it. CHECK your oil REGULARLY, No joke, a new S2000 can go through 1 qt or more every 1k miles easily. There are several oil filters made by Honda for the S2000, the newer ones are better built but the old ones work fine too.
