How many of you with ITRs have misshifted?
Seriously, just searching through message posts, it seems like a lot, and it seems like it's a common problem w/ 2000 & 2001 R's. Please pick the year of R you own if you've misshifted or if you've never misshifted please pick accordingly. Also feel free to post about the misshift incident. For this poll, consider a misshift where you missed gear and caused the engine to over-rev.

Define misshift.
I've never shifted lets say 3-2 on a redline shift...but I have missed a 1-2 shift by hitting the gate between 2-4 so I ended up revving in neutral...

In this case, I'm considering a misshift where you missed gear and caused the engine to over rev. I'll try to edit the original post

Who hasnt misshifted? If your driving your car even remotely hard your bound to mis a shift now and then. Doesnt mater if you street race, drag , or autoX.
True, but how who has misshifted and overrevved? That's what I'm after... it seems to me like there might be a problem with the stock ITR tranny... right now however I'm just collecting some informal data to see if I really want to pursue anything.

And no, I'm nottrying to be funny.
aside from 1st and Reverse, i have no troule getting into gears.....well actually now that i think about it...when im at the drag strip, hard shifts 1-2 and 2-3 i feel the shifter sort of scratch or go into gear sort of...whats the word...roughly? like trying to shove it into a spot that might be too small for it to fit, but u bang it in there anyway....
But I'm pretty sure its because im on and off the clutch quickly...and im pretty sure its driver error
I've never had trouble at an autox course with proper rev-matching...but i've only been autoxing twice so...can't really say i have too much experience in that dept

Seems to me there might be a problem with some ITR drivers!

I'd recommend some engine mount inserts, and shift linkage bushings to give a little more precise feel when doing "spirited" shifts. That, ... and a little care when performing the procedure of shifting.
BTW -- is this a problem when drag racing, or under "normal" driving conditions?
Additionally, a large number of people have also totaled or otherwise wrecked their Rs.
Is this indicative of a suspension or steering problem as well?
Or just that that average age of these people is like 17.5 or lower.

most likely its because 99.9% of people who bought type Rs drive the **** out of them, so there are bound to be a larger percentage of mis-shifts. ive gone from 2nd back to first twice(not pretty) when i first got the car, but it was because i wasnt use to such close gates, no fault on the tranny.
Thanks for the suggestions. The reason for this post is because I recently bent my valves from a misshift for the second time. Both misshifts have happened when speed-shifting, however whenever I drive around sometimes when I go to shift it doesn't feel like the collar wants to move into gear. What do engine mount inserts do and where exactly to they go?

Striker> Honestly, that may be a possibility, but if it's happened to an overwhelming amount of people, one might conclude that there is a problem with the tranny.
I have been on this board for about two years and very few misshifts have been reported. Of those that have, I don't think I can recall one that was not pilot error.

Engine mount inserts (Energy Suspension) go into the stock engine mounts (they occupy an empty space with the stock mounts), and help limit engine/transaxle movement relative to the rest of the car, but the shifter bushings are what helps give more "feel" or precision to the shifting action.
I am in no way implying that the stock set-up is defective!
Frankly, I'm personally thinking of getting even harder engine mounts (probably Mugen), in that I don't mind the extra vibration that these types of improvements induce (which is why the mounts are relatively soft to begin with).
P.S. I pull off an Occassional 5-3 shift on the highway now and then, too!
... speed shifting, eh...
If you think these "gates" are close, go test drive an RSX-s (but take it easy).

Ok thanks for the info again
. I know what you mean w/ the RSX-S, a guy here in town misshifted majorly and ended up having to buy a whole new motor; he had the car for only a couple of months.

I money shifted my car on Watkins Glen. Last turn, the car was all loaded up to the side, and I was bouncing off the outside curbing. Tried to grab 4th, grabbed 2nd instead. Whoops.
There's nothing wrong with the damn tranny, other than the synchros work very very well

ahh damn, I should read the post instead of just assuming
I've never missed a shift that caused an over-rev. So cancel out that vote on the '98. I've only missed upshifts by not getting through the gate correctly, mostly drag "racing" and trying to shift on the exit of damn T9 at PIR.
have a good weekend all

Mis-shift = driver error
If a lot of ITR drivers are mis-shifting, it may be because this is a car whose drivers drive it aggressively AND whose drivers don't have a lot of previous experience doing so in other cars.

I don't own a Type R but I drove my friends '00 R the other weekend. He was messing up the 1-2 shift constantly and I had trouble with the scratch and over rev on a few occasions myself. It just seemed to get stuck inbetween. Weird.
