is it too much or is it smart

Your reply is a waste of bandwidth.
I could easily list shitloads of engine builds gone wrong, while I have NEVER seen an O.E Acura block smoke upon installation.
My B18C5 has about 70K on it now, and I NEVER have problems with it, it makes good power (176whp/130ft-lbs. of torque to the wheels) and never smokes at all.

Tool.
That's a nice price for a brand spanking new block. Considering you don't know how the previous owner(s) treated the motor, definitely worth it. If you have the cash of course.

IMO, unless you already have a complete swap with a dead bottom end, it's a waste. things like alternator, starter, various sensors, wiring harness, axles, mounts, brackets, gaskets, header... all the bullshit you never think about - that will add up quick. however, if you already have a swap, and wanna put a fresh bottom end on it, then it's smart.
seems like a good deal to me and i would def. do it. but im all about making bad decisions sometimes and who knows this might be one of them. but the majority of the previous posts seem to agree with me. GO FOR IT

Is this actually a fully assembled block though? If it is 2800 for the bare block alone, and assembly is still required, then that negates the advantage you are talking about, does it not?
EDIT - After checking Majestic, it does look like it is the full block for 2802, but it is not entirely clear. That actually may not be so bad, considering used c5 swaps go for about what 5k?

$2,800.00 for a completely assembled shortblock - that's the fair price from an Acura dealer if they want a sale.
I have a friend who purchsed the brand new block, head, and tranny from a local dealer and he assembled it all at home. The car pulled nicely and never smokes to this day.
Buying a complete shortblock from Acura insures that you won't have any doubts in terms of the bottom end. When you build a bottom end you have too much guesswork going on, and you have to rely on to many different people/sources when it comes to the parts, machine work, labor, specs, etc.

Well dude, think about the investment man..
you're going to make your car feel like brand new, and it will last FOREVER.
There would be less problems to deal with, and I doubt 100% that there would be any defects on a brand new block from Acura. Honda reliability mang.. lol
I didn't know they still make new B18C5 blocks..
Or do they still make them?
Or do they just have some leftover blocks that didn't get put into Integra type R's?
That's pretty cool anyways..
I wonder if they have brand new SR20DET (not S15, but S13 or S14) blocks in Japan =P
Probably not..
Anyways, keep us posted on your decision.

You're in FLA bro - there are a number of reputable shops in your state that could do the block swap.
Also note that you can keep your B16A2 head and drop it on that block. All I'd plan on doing later on would be some nice mild cams, such as Skunk2 Stage 1 or Toda A cams, and then get good bolt-ons and some sort of engine management and have it tuned.

can always purchase a used b16 bottom end, have as much work done to it as you want such as stroked, bored, balanced, with pistons, rods and crank, and still be under the cost of itr block new, BUT its always nice to have that b18c5 read out on the block, and to know that your block is legit.
