A/C compressor. or clutch. How do I tell which is bad.
I believe my a/c compressor froze up, and then my clutch let go a few seconds later (this is my wife's car, so I got no idea what happenned for sure).
I already have a replacement a/c compressor from someone who wrecked his identicle honda accord. But am not sure if I can check and find out that maybe I only need to only change the clutch (if I do this can I maintain the R12 charge?).
I am pretty sure it froze up (temporarily), because my wife drove it straight home, and I could definitely smell the remnants of the burning belt.
I do have enough R12 to do another complete charge. And I also have a vacuum pump, but it only pullls just over 28" of mercury, and I've heard others say theirs will pull almost 30. I'd have to borrow my father in laws to pull a better vacuum. He seems to think that maybe the system sprung a leak (just a guess on his part, no testing here, he says that kind of thing is common), but I don't (there is still pressure if I push in the valve stem you can hear it). I suspect that there was a little moisture or something in the system, and over the years the compressor got to the point of dying and now I must bury it.
What do you think?
