Default Water Pump Leak? New motor/pump/gasket...

2000 GSR Shortblock
1995 GSR everything else

Fresh build on the motor, everything is BRAND NEW, never even been started yet. Finally done getting the motor bolted in and everything together and I fill up the coolant... When im done i noticed that there was some dripping underneath the car... just a slow drip....... drip...... drip.....

get down under there and its dripping where the oil pan meets the block under the alternator (water pump)... it looks like its running down the side of the waterpump about 2inches up... that is the only spot i can find it leaking. The new oem waterpump was just put on when the motor was assembled and there is plenty of hondabond around the whole thing.

must be a bad gasket right? when i pump the radiator hose it comes out quicker... the motor has zero miles on it. I havent started it yet so the pump hasnt even seen pressure yet.

See if you can tell whether it's coming out from the waterpump weep hole. That would be a bad pump. Otherwise if it's a bad gasket, I figure it would drip down INSIDE the lower timing cover.

lets hope you got your receipt to take that bad water pump back to the parts store.

It could just be the gasket though

it is on i think the top left of the water pump

if you have to remove it use hondabond HT on the gasket of just omit the gasket and use hondabond alone AND MAKE SHURE YOU TORQUE IT PROPERLY

it has some kind of adhesive on it now, its a grey color so i am guessing it is hondabond

its definetly coming from the waterpump side of the block, i put paper towels all around everything then filled it up and under the inlet of the water pipe it was dry so its not that

Make sure its not coming from behind the water pump where the o-ring is. Maybe when it was assembled they pinched the o-ring or didn't replace it. I've seen that quite a few times from people not paying attention when putting them together. It's a pain in the a$$ changing it with the motor in though. Good luck with that.

You are never supposed to use Honda bond with an o-ring. The water pump has an o-ring so the problem may be that the builder left out the o-ring when installing the water pump and tried to seal it with honda bond. Or he used the o-ring and honda bond, causing the leak. Pretty much a rookie mistake.

OR the problem could be exactly what Sack Master said above.
If that is where the leak is, you must replace the rubber O-ring on the water pipe and use a GENUINE HONDA o-ring...not one from the parts store. The oem's work much much better. Lube that o-ring with some dishwasher liquid soap. If you pinch it when installing it, water will leak everytime as the o-ring gets cut.

Yeah, O-rings are pressure-activated, so you'll screw them up by putting HondaBond in with them.

If I remember, the waterpump has 2 weep holes. Coming from the shaft bearings, one sorta points towards the driver's face, one towards his feet. If the pump shaft bearings leak, it comes out the lower weep hole.

There's other places for it to leak...

You can see the O-ring around the pump. Most of that's inside the plastic timing belt cover, so you'll see it leak out below the crank pulley.

There's also the tube (#9) that runs along the back of the block. Maybe it's leaking at the end of that? If so, you'll need a couple #16 gaskets, & you take off the thermostat housing #7.

its defineatly not leaking from the tube. right now with no pressure it drips out... if i start the car it should spray out correct? and then i will be able to pinpoint my problem much easier...

if the oring on the water pipe is pinched wouldnt it leak on the tube side not the gear side?

ok well i found that one of the water pump housing bolts were stripped. it is the one by the alternator that has an open backing so i just put in a longer bolt (there was a short bolt in there that didnt go through all the way)... anyway it snugged up all nice - so thats solved...

BUTTTT its still leaking!

Getting a HeliCoil in there should be fun!?!

I wonder if you can remove the plastic fender liner, take the mounts off the front, & tilt the engine down just enough to work thru the fender?? You'll want enough room so you can get the tap straight & square.

Better yet, aren't some of those bolts outside the block? Like if you drilled the hole thru, & used a longer bolt with a nut?

no that bolt snugs down fine now...

does the bolt that goes through the timing belt cover do anything to tie in the water pump? the longer one that is in the middle of the cover.

you need to replace a seal somewhere and torque everything down evenly
