Spoon Cams...Anything Wrong With Them?
I did a search on this and only a handful of topics came up. Does anybody know anything about these, performance-wise? I was planning on the Toda Spec B's, but then decided to tone it down to to Spec A's. Then I remembered that the Spoon cams were reported to be a little more aggressive than the A's so i decided to do research on it. Anybody got any input?
It doesn't seem like a popular choice around here and I'm wondering why. TIA

.....from what I remember, the spoon cams were more mild than the spec a's.
So you went from b's to a's, to now maybe spoons?
Heh, pretty soon you'll be talking yourself into type r cams...

From what I've gathered, they are (as you said) a bit more aggressive than A's, but not as aggressive as B's wich are more so on both lobes. I think they're some of the best cams you can get without messing with the non VTEC lobe. They're supposed to make 10hp maybe 12-13 dialed in, but I don't think anyone has hard numbers. Keep in mind this is just my take on what I've heard.
Pros: Made by Honda to Spoon specs, perfect idle, it's spoon
Cons: Big dolla
I plan on getting them

Just check A-J racings website $900 for both the toda or spoons
Here are the specs taken from another topic. Lift is larger on the Todas but the Spoon wins out in duration. I get the basic explanation of what lift and duration are but I'm unsure as to what the effects of each property is on power.
Toda A's
INTAKE lift - 11.6 mm, duration - 250 @ 1mm
EXHAUST lift - 11.2mm, duration - 240 @ 1mm
SPOON
INTAKE lift - 11.53 mm, duration - 256 @ 1mm
EXHAUST lift - 11.13 mm, duration - 245 @ 1mm

I'll look again. You can probably sell your stock Type R Cams for a couple of bills too.
seems to me spoons have almost the same lift and more duration than the A´s. So perhaps a little bit more top end power than the A´s!?

That's good to know, most sites don't sell them that cheap. I went to http://www.aj-racing.com and didn't see any pricing

I had them about 2 years ago in my 93 DX hatch. Following mods...
DC Sports 4-1 (US 2.25" collector)
Test pipe into stock ITR b-pipe, no muffler
Iceman intake for GSR, top piece only(filter on a stick)
ITR head, stock ports, not milled
Crower titanium retainers, Mugen headgasket
B18C1 bottom end w/ 81.25mm US B16A pistons
Mugen chipped P28, Fields VTEC controller
Best cam gear setting was +6, +1 and it made 188 and 130 at the wheels.
This same motor with ITR cams made 179 and 129 at the wheels.
The Spoons were identical before VTEC just like the ITRs.. but then after VTEC they gradually picked up more and more... like at 6000rpm they were 3hp ahead, by 7000rpm they were 7hp ahead and at 8200(when they peaked), they had 9hp on top of the ITRs. The torque was also more after VTEC..
The ITR's torque gradually dropped, while the Spoon cams torque stayed more "constant". Don't let the 1 ft/lb difference in peak torque fool you. The car would run 14.0@100 spinning hard on shitty Michelins.. this was in 90 degrees heat with Florida humidity.
Spoon cams get a thumbs up from me.

Before VTEC was NO change, and I mean none. Looked completely the same.
In a stock ITR motor they would do well. Similar to Spec A cams. Weird thing is, in that same motor.. Spec A gave higher peak HP(191) even though they have less duration. Hmmm....
