Default Poor man's intake...

Ok I'll admit I am cheap as hell, but there's a reason for it. Firstoff my dad co-signed my loan (96 Accord EX 2.2 VTEC) and would majorly frown if he saw me spending money on upgrades. So here's the deal...

My buddy just talked me into hacking my airbox (right below where the airfilter goes) with a sawzaw and his dremil tool. We haked every side but the side up against the fender, don't worry about making it weak its pretty dense plastic. Talk about instant cheap horsepower!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And holy crap the thing sounds better than his $300 Stillen intake on his Maxima, another friend with a 3000GT is jealous. It just purrs (sp?) when the vtec kicks in.

We also unhooked the resonator (hidden underneath) and gay little muffler thing (on the side of the intake) and plugged them with spray can lids...it looks cheap as hell but all said and done I bet I got 10-15 some hp gain.

I should also add the the actual airscoop is gone...well sorta. Its completely hacked open and turned into a ghetto ram air. Completely stock the airbox sits on top of a box/muffler aka extremely restrictive (henceforth called "the box"). "The box" consist of basically a U-shaped pipe with two vents coming off of it to swirl the air around and I'm assuming make it quieter. One end of the U connectes up the airbox and filter the other to the actual airscoop by the battery. It takes some work but you can hack oper "the box" until the side facing the bumper is open, then I positioned some styrofoam to force air up into the airbox. I also clipped a bit of the fenderwell to get more air in there. I should add I'm not honestly sure if this step made much of a difference for the amount of work that it took, so just start progressively and do what you can.

Screw the K&N typhoon. I guarantee mine does just as much gain and sounds just as good if not better. K&N typhoon-$300; Sounding good and getting free horsepower-priceless.

Dude it makes heads turn and it didn't cost me a thing; enough said.

Call me cheap, call me pithetic but let me know what you guys think and any results you've had.

Also while I got your attention anyone know where I can find stats on my 96 Accord? I looked forever tonight trying to find stock quarter mile times, bhp, etc. on the 2.2 vs 2.7 V6. I'm thinking about MAYBE someday putting the V6 in it.

Thanks in advance

Yeah when you think about it only 45 hp gain out of 2 more cylinders and half a liter.

I'll try to get pics for ya, like I said I'm cheap and don't have a camera.

Just let me know what's confusing and I'll try to explain...it is like 3am and I'm running on caffeine.

if i were you i wouldnt have done that...what if when you sell the car the person doesnt want that purrring sound? it probably would have been smarter to just remove the stock air box completely and just attach a cone filer to the end of the intake tube, that way if you need to u can return the car to stock no problem...and you would prob get more hp...but i cant blame u on the cheapness, i made my own too

from the sounds of it, you didn't completely remove the resonator box from the car, you just disconnected it...you should completely remove this...

afterwards, remove your front turnsignal light in the bumper so that cool fresh air from the outside world can get into your intake...this will be much more of a ram air effect than your scoop....also, if you are worried about it, you can always wire one of the lights in your corner lens to act like a turn signal so that this modification remains legal...

the oem intake is actually made quite well and functions just fine...it's just removing all the crap that blocks it from sucking like it should...

if would be future buyer wants to be a dick about it, I'll simply buy a new airbox and scoop from a junkyard.

Yeah took another look at the resignator, didn't realize it has vaccuum lines running all over. Plugged those up and saw a small jumb in my gas mileage.

Still runs like a beast!

wow, sounds almost exactly like what i did to my eg sedan. except i didnt need to cut anything off, so it was much more clean. best bet is to just get the bumper out of the way, then u can see any additional parts that you can get out of the way. from there, what i did was take some 4" aluminum flex/accordian piping (like the kind above your stove fan in the kitchen) and hooked one end onto my intake piping, then wormed it around until the other end ended up facing the air dam. in the end, i ended up with a FREE ram air intake! AND i had the option of putting everything back to stock

That has to be one of the most ghetto mods I've ever read about. I may just not be comprehending your engrish but it sounds like you chopped the hell out of everything to gain maybe 5 hp and have a airbox that is pretty much completely open to water. I would seriously like to see figures for your jump in fuel econ. as well.

from what i understand, this mod is less suceptible to water than CAI. well, tahts how it is on my EG, anyway. the "ram air" piping on my EG was not directly linked to the intake (for just that reason), but instead only directed air towards the intake piping. all of the intake piping remains inside the engine bay.

edit: oh yea, im sure the gains are minimal, but like schmitey says, it sounds cool 0

If you didn't want to hear anything about it then why would you post here.... gaining 10-15 horsepower by using cutting your air box and removing some of the stuff.... i doubt it.... and why wouldn't you take your weekly lunch money ($25) buy an ebay intake tubing... and throw a cone filter on that... or even the cone filter on the end of the oem tubing would have been better... i feel bad for that poor honda...

You did pretty much the same thing that I did, except I used the AEM short ram that I had and modded the box to hold the filter.

its somewhat of a air scoop in the engine bay right in front of the airbox on the F22B.

i mean ****, i didn't have to even start this post. I wanted to do something different and see if this would work, if it didn't I'd buy an intake. It works good enough for me, like I said if you don't like it don't do it. It helped my gas mileage and torque. Furthermore I'm not gonna run a dyno to prove myself and get all you whiny SOB's who buy all of your mods and pay someone to install them off my ***. Ingenuity...when other people do something out of the ordinary.

This was simply a fun experiment that my friend and I did. And yeah, as someone commented, ideally I wouldn't have cut holes in the airbox itself, but it was a progressive thing and we didn't realize how restrictive the air scoop was. So...afterwards we hacked it apart and made the box itself the airscoop.

If I feel like it and everyone quits their biatching I might post pics of my "ghetto rig."
