piston to valve clearance
Clay the head and find out. It's a really good idea if you are concerend with clearence. It will tell you what room for improvement you have down the road IE overlap, duration, lift. But yeah it will work.

if i clay the motor, wouldn't that involve ruining a head gasket? because don't you have to torque down a couple of the head bolts and obviously there hast o be a gasket in there for correct readings...

Some head gaskets you can get away with torquing and reusing, but I would recommend getting another for the build. You have to torque down all the head bolts. It will tell you how far you can go before its a worry though.
Having an ls crank does not change the amount of piston to valve clearance you have, havning non-vtec pistons where the reliefs are hardly cut-- does. My old nA setup had portflow valvesprings / stock retainers, jun3s, b16 pistons / stock gsr rods. revved to 9500. late. the only way yours will be different is in that your rods are going to stretch more, but this won't be an issue if you upgraded the bolts (did you?).

Just put it together, crank it, engage vtec and see if you hear anything....actually, you should be fine with stock cams(when you get stage IIIs you might need to clay though).
