High mileage b18c1 head...what kind of maintenance?
I am getting a 95 GSR with a b18c1 motor in it. The motor has 145,000 miles on it. I am planning on rebuilding the bottom end with new sleeves, pistons, rods, bearings, gaskets, balance and micropolish crank. My question is that does mileage really effect the head at all? What, if any, work should be done to the head to ensure reliabiity? Thanks for your input. Hopefully my new project gets started soon.
What about new valve springs? I'd assume they'd be sort of 'tired' after 100k + so I'd add that to your list. It couldn't hurt -- and if your going so all out on the build anyways, you might as well.

I would definately:
-Get head resurfaced
-Replace valve stem seals
-Check valve stems for make sure they are within spec. At 175k, my LS had alot of play in 2 valve stems so they needed to be replaced. This is fairly cheap to be done by a machine shop.
-Replace valve springs most likely because your GSR is gonna be revving high.
-Have your valves seats checked to see if they need to be cleaned up (valve job).
Make sure when you disassemble the head that you mark EVERYTHING to make sure you put the correct lifter, retainer, etc in the same place where you took it from. After alot of mileage you do not want to mess with the how each lifter sits in the head and so on.

I think I am just going to re-do the valve seals, springs, and retainers probably just to be safe.</TD></TR></TABLE>
Your retainers should be fine unless you plan on revving really high. There have been instances of aftermarket retainers breaking so I would suggest just sticking with your stock ones.
