I am about to change the head gasket and head on my motor. Ive done a few b-series head swaps and ls/vtec conversions so Im not new to this, only new to the d series. To remove the head from the block on a d series, do I need to take off the cam caps and the cam to get to the head bolts like on a b series? I dont want to be removing unnessecary bolts that I will have to tighten and re-torque later.

 

remove the valve cover and you have direct access to all the head bolts. you dont have to remove the entire valvetrain like on a b series, eat your heart out b series people.

Also, from experience i would recommend using the head gasket from a 92-95 EX/Si D16Z6 VTEC engine, rather than the d15b7 gasket. Its an improved MLS design, rather than lead/paper. Its more durable, and will give you a very very slight increase in performance to a very small increase in compression. (its thinner than a d15b7 gasket). Also, if you ever have to remove the head again, you wont have to scrape the head and block off for hours, which we all know is a humongous pain in the ***.

yah just pull the 4 valve cover nuts. you will need to remove the 12mm nuts from both the IM and the exhaust manifold. unplug the 2 plugs for the dist. and remove the 10 --14mm headbolts **if you have power steering there will be a 14mm bolt that holds the bracket in the front right of the head. also slip your timing belt off and make sure to mark the belt and tooth that it was on so you get it in the right spot!! good luck

damn, sounds too easy compared to the b series... I think I could have the new head on in a matter of hours... thanks for all your help
