Default Anyone using a cheap cold air intake to start charge pipe?

I been looking at the jc whitney piping. I am just not sure which ones to order. I hate to order the wrong one and money down the drain. I was thinking has anyone use a cold air intake off ebay to start their intercooler piping? This is for a ls vtec...more an likely I would buy the integra cold air intake

UPDATE**** june 30... I just recieved my R1 front mount intake deal ...yes the one with the intake that sits in front like a intercooler. I just used the piping and all of it lines up perfectly from the tb to my precision intercooler. I suggest using this way if you are not sure. Thanks

that is a good way to go for aluminum piping, There are some places that sell CAI intakes for 50 dollar. I used 3 of them on my car and it looks great. I had it cut and welded for turbo piping.

3 inch pipes are bit too big...u might be loosing valuable pressure...2.25 is sufficeint for a charge pipe.

can the mild steel piping from kteller be used for intercooler and charge piping, or would the aluminised steel from jcwhitney be better? whats the difference between the material?
thanks

Arospeed sells 3" dia aluminum pipes in straight sections 45 degree, 30 degree, and 90 degree all of them are about 2.5 feet long and you can get them for $20 a stick its good and cheap. the only thing I would suggest is the have them rolled so the boost doesn't blow them apart!!! PM if you want more info I think I can find pictures

I bought a ebay intake for $20. Works great. Just needed to weld on a bung for the BOV (if you're even putting it there). I even used the filter that came along with it on my turbo. Talk about $$ saving. The tricky part is going to be finding the right size reducer. The diameter of the ebay CAI was 70mm Aluminum and I was using 2.25" SS IC piping. Creativity owned that problem though.

I used one of those cold air intakes where the filter is supposed to go in the front of the car, like an intercooler, I call it an interfooler. I used that, just removed the filter and case and my i'c lined right up. Done and done.

I was planning to make my own IC piping using mandrel bends and then run it right into my AEM SRI for the charge pipe. But would the large diameter of the SRI effect pressure or performance in a negative way? Seems like 7psi is 7 pounds per square inch no matter how much area it fills....but I don't know....

but think about this, if theres more square inches to fill wont it take longer to fill to 7 psi? like a bike tire will fill to 35 psi much faster than the tire on an 18 wheeler. so the car will take a little while longer to make full boost, and will lose a little responsiveness.

I would only go 2.5" on upper IC pipe unless u have a race car.

Its all about the initial fill but that is why you have a 2 step revlimiter in 1st gear to build boost at the line. i wouldn't worry about. I am going to run a 3" pipe with no worrys about anything

Remember math class guys?

Pressure is a function of volume.

Whether the pressure drop will be significant, or even noticable, I don't know.

Oh, ****, what was I thinking. Why would I want to save money and do it myself when I can order up a $450 piping kit and pay a shop $100+ to install it.

But yeah, I think I will try out the AEM SRI, might as well I already have it and it on there. Then if I have any noticeable problems I make a 2.25-2.5" charge pipe.

Anyone already tried it and had a problem? Or liked it?

I've heard KTeller8 has good pipes and bends to use for that, for cheap. Shoot a PM his way and ask.

I say go with kteller . Thats what I did....i ordered 6 90 degree bends of 2.25" piping and 1 180 degree bend of 2.25" piping to do all my pipes. Make sure you get the longer 180 degree bend. I've also compared the kteller pipes and jc whitney pipes. The kteller pipes seem to be much nicer quality.

Why are you going with 2.25 all the way SOHC_MShue? This is going to cost you top end power. I say 2.25 to intercooler and then 2.5 to TB. My.02$
