no oil in oil filter
it does not sound good but i do get oil pressure, about 60 psi when the motor is reving. i just dont understand why its not going in the filter. i know the filter has a bypass but i dont think the block does.
this motor is not in a street car and i do change the oil every time i go to the track so thats like a oil change every 20 miles or so. im just worried that there is no filtering of the oil at all. when the oil drains out of the pan i can see tiny metal filings in the oil, almost looks like flake in a nice paint job just way smaller.
i do check the bearings every race so there is no damage there.
btw this is a b18a1 with a vtec head.

you mean the filter is as clean as it was when you put it on? that cant be good....oil pump going bad maybe?
60psi seem a little low...most B18's run 75-85psi when reving up.
have a good look at it before racing it anymore......fix it.......

filter is clean as a whistler, looks like no oil ever went inside.

wow.........thats not good.........you dont have any stupid oil filter adapters/relocation kits installed do you?
there might be some passage from the oil pump to the filter blocked somehow.....?
i would try to get some expert opinions on this......have a good engine builder/machine shop have a look at it.....
one thing thats really interesting is that you can still get a oil pressure reading from the block. so im assuming you are using the factory oil pressure switch hole right beside the filter. so if oil is making it to there is should be able to go into the filter............something must be stuck in there or somehting but how would you see it...........?

my oil pressure guage is tee-ed off the stock oil pressure sender. im also using this tee for oil to the head for vtec. i dont understand it at all, the sender is right beside the oil filter. ill try to look in the hole tomorrow with a mirror or something.

When you go to change your oil, do you let the car warm up first, or do you just go change it after it has sat for a day or so?
If it's the latter, then the oil just drained out of the filter. No big deal. If you let the car warm up, and it looks like that, then that's bad.

it was about a day after it ran, but the thing that is worrying me is that it looks like oil was never in the filter at all. its dry inside.
It might drain out, it's hard to clog the passage from the oil pump to the filter since that line is probably more than an inch in diameter, I have not measured it but I know its big enough to stick a finger into. And from what I noticed when I was building my lsvtec is that the oil pump sends the oil through that 1"+ line into the filter and then the oil travels into the main bearings. I think it would be pretty damn hard to not use the oil filter and not spin a bearing, especially in a race car. I think you should cut your filter in half and inspect the filtering material, this will tell you how the engine is doing.

I've heard of an oil bypass before, but I don't know if hondas have them. But I do agree, pull the filter off and the crank the engine over and see if oil shoots out where the filter goes.

it will look like that if you leave it to drain, cut it open if it is a little oily then it has oil. If your car ran on low pressure or none at all then the engine would of been gone by time you started and about 10 sec later

And before you ever install an oil filter, you're supposed to fill it with oil. Fill it 3 or more times and let it absorb it. Not to the point where it's going to spill out as you put it on.

yup, as soon as i cut the filter open oil started spilling everywhere, i should have noticed the weight diference from a unused filter and my so called filter with no oil in it.
so there is no problem with the motor or oil system, everythings a-ok
