RX 7 or really nice hatch
This might sound like a stupid question but i got a really good deal on a newer turbo RX 7 should I pay the 14,000 for that or should i just do a really nice hatch?

It is really nice the guy that owns it now almost never drives it and he keeps it really clean. The only thing that i dont like about it is it smells like smoke but i think i can get over it for that price.
You really did not even need to ask. If you got the money to spend. Dont spend it on a hatch. Even though I would. But really its up to you buy what you want.

if I had that choice I'd rock the Rotary. I owned a 77 RX-3 SP back in the day with a Bridge ported Racing Beat motor. That thing revved all day long to 9k. I really miss that car.
Having owned a moderately modded FD, I know what kind of effort it takes to maintain one. It is not cheap to maintain or buy parts for, and it is not an easy car to work on, but it definately is a lot of fun.
But here are some of the things that you have to be ready for:
-gas mileage was 10-12 MPG on my car. A full tank 6 months ago cost me $25 @ $2.05 per gallon. I had to fill up every week, so monthly costs were around $100-$150 for gas alone.
-oil changes every 1000-2000 miles. I changed mine every month which is roughly 1000 miles.
-spark plug changes every 3K-10K miles, depending on how much your car is modded. I changed my plugs twice in the 6 months I owned the car. First time took me 4 hours (plugs only), 2nd time hour and a half (plugs and wires). 2nd time I knew what I was doing but it still took a long time because of where the plugs and wires are located and the stuff you have to remove to get to them.
-aftermarket parts are expensive.
-You could blow your motor if you mod the car incorrectly. You cannot just throw an intake, exhaust, downpipe, intercooler on a stock FD without doing anything to the ECU, or without doing anything to control boost spikes/creep.
I gotta cut this post short, because I have to get ready for work. I'll try to post a little more later though.

if you plan to own a Rx7 with a honda maintenance budget, good luck.
i know many rotary peeps that get jealous at the simplicity of hondas. i guess tha grass is always green on the other side.
plan on changing every vacuum line on that thing , major PITA.
if you arent going to put a standalone on it, dont mod it.

That's some good info.
I would probably **** myself up or get license takin away if i had one.

Well if you get a 93-95 RX7 before you do ANYTHING to it.
-Upgrade the plastic air separator tank to a metal one.
-Upgrade the radiator, fan, thermostat...basically entire cooling system.
-Go ahead and replace the absolute MESS of rubber vacuum lines under the intake manifold with silicone ones.
-If the engine and turbo's have more then 80,000 miles on them more then likely it's time for a rebuild. You may just want to go ahead and do it and mill the rotors and upgrade to 3mm apex seals anyways.
-Invest in a good tuning system. I'd say the most popular would be the APEXi Power FC commander. I would do this before even considering adding an I/DP/E etc...
-Make sure there is a local place that deals with rotary's. I doubt there's a PF or RX7.com everywhere in the country.
Basically if it were me there's no way in hell I'd have an FD RX-7 as my daily driver, and sole means of transportation, but damn if a '93 RX7 R1 isn't one of the best all around sports cars.

My freind said go ahead and get it but he sayed his hatch would be faster. HE also sayed it would be a chick magnet till he beat me up the mountain or on the drag strip. Is he just blushing or would his hatch be faster for the same amount of money?
ill put it to you this way, if you arent very mechanically inclined and cant do a majority of work yourself, dont plan on owning one. I own an FC3S but the same rules apply. After blowing my 2nd motor i figured, **** it i shoulda of bought a standalone for my first mod. The reason i enjoy my honda so much is that i can do simple/moderate mods without having to get it tuned EVERYTIME. Such as i can put cams/intake/header/exhaust/2layer HG and not HAVE to get it tuned for it to run me to work etc etc. With my rx7 it was a constant battle of money i couldnt afford it as my daily driver. Was it fast? To4e upgrade, full 3 inch exhaust; **** ya for 3500 miles it was pretty damn fast. But i popped my motor cuz it was running on an old tune. But if you do it correctly with an FD you can make 350 and be pretty realible. And if this is gonna be your first and only car DONOT buy a TURBO'D rotary for your first car it is the worst idea in the WHOLE world.

For the same amount of money a Hatch could be made faster then an FD. But the FD still has a bigger fun factor behind it.
For under $10K spent on both cars the Hatch would be faster then the FD. But with a higher budget you have a lot more options with the FD, ie built 3 rotor w/ single turbo, built V8, maybe even a built V8 with some big twins (if they can fit). A lot of custom engine installs have also been done with FDs such as the 2JZ, SR20DET and I'm sure even a RB25/26 have been swapped in one. So if your pockets are deep enough, you have those options too.

I would say if your not 100% confident about driving the rx7 don't risk your life. My room mate just crashed (4th time) his 2g eclipse GSX. He wasn't paying attention to the road ahead of him and BAM hydroplane rotate 180 and smack into the gaurd rail! I can drive my integra fairly well and am to the point where I may buy a Nissan 240sx and start racing that but until then practice, practice, practice. Oh, one last thing RX7's are a beutiful on a race track, nothing beats the sound of a turbo rotary at wide open throttle.

I am a HUGE rotary freak(just look at the email address in my profile), but if you don't have something more economical to drive daily then don't get the seven.
I don't even want to start a rotary project until I have enough money to buy a fully built motor from the get go.

You need to keep in mind the insurance on a civic hatch and a 2 seater turbo fd rx-7 WILL NEVER BE SAID IN THE SAME SENTENCE.
expecially if your a younger/unmarried individual.

You know it's funny that you mentioned insurance, because my insurance for my 93 FD was a lot less then it was for my 01 Prelude.
