Default Advance Timing

I have a near stock 01 GS-R. Ive read that some people advance the timing to 18 for a little gain in power? What exactly is it and how do you do it?

just to throw my two cents

use a digital timming gun..

and trip the ecu so it doesnt goes back to 16 again...
