what is this part
this is not my car. i have a 91 crx Si. but this pic will help kinda. i replaced head gasket and broke this but don't know what it is.
look at the engine compartment photo right above the sway bar on the left hand side. the black cylinder you can barely see the top. it has two hoses running out of it one of them is running to the throttle body or the fuel injection. and the other is running to a part mounted on the fire wall. i don't know if the image thing worked so here is the website http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/381259/5 thanks for the help
Your charcoal canister is there for smog.
It takes fumes from your valve cover and the back of your block and re-circulates them into your intake. And the Charcoal condenses some of the fumes to make gasoline and puts that back into your tank.
It will affect gas mileage, and may improve gas mileage.
