Default 2001 GSR -- Looking for what to do first...

My wife has a 2001 GSR that she is debating on trading in on an RSX but I am trying to talk her out of it. I have been modding my Evo 8 and she has become interested in possibly modding her GSR instead of going for something new.

So my first post/question is this:

What are good first mods to do with a Stock '01 GSR?

She is looking for something to increase the accel/speed of the car, but remain fairly stealth about it. I am a fan of sticking to one Tuner's parts bin if possible, so if you do have some insight for a newB, I would like specific tuners to go with too. We are talking for spending $1-2k so let me know whats up! I know a stock GSR is around 140whp, so is it realistic to go all motor to something like 175+whp?

I have a lot of background with 4g63's but nothing from Honda's yard.

I look forward to seeing what you have to say, and thanks in advance.

Sus

turbo it and call it a day. IMO you spend all that money on N/A parts and it pretty much gets you no where unless you actually dig into the motor and tear the bitch apart. why use thousands of dollars on n/a parts to gain 30whp when you can just spend around $3k on a decent turbo setup and make 100+whp? these are just my thoughts and opinions.

I figured as much (I/H/E). What Tuner's do you highly recommend? And with the basic bolt-ons what are we looking at in terms of change? +15-30whp? Is there more to be had without rebuilding the bottom end?

I like the FI path too, but she needs a bullet proof machine so...

Thanks for the info so far, and please keep the data coming!

a real j's racing intake wont fit on a GSR. Id go with comptech stuff. Its good stuff, and it wont break the bank-to much. icebox, header, catback exhaust will run you about 1000 bucks or so. then call it a day. to get over 175 whp youre going to need bigger cams, and a bigger CR, as well as more breathing.

How I would do it:
Suspension

Motor
Drop-in air filter (no need for an aftermarket one)
JDM ITR headers
exhaust
headwork (cams, camgears, pistons, etc......)

175+ whp is not too hard to achieve without cracking open the bottom end or changing the CR, but you will need more aggressive cams/valvetrain/tuning device. youll also probably want to change to a single runner intake manifold, do an OBDI conversion, and tune with hondata/vafc

I have a Comptech intake with an A'PEXi power filter. No complaints with that. I also have a A'PEXi N1 exhaust on the way. I have some Neuspeed race springs for sale, they are off of my GSR. I have full coilovers now. If your interested let me know.

@ GeeSR18C --

Thanks for the info. Looks like I need to read up on this ODBI conversion - any good links? I must be a little slow today, but what is the CR acronym for? As for the singel runner intake manifold, who's do you suggest?

Also if we decide to go more agressive with cams etc. again who's products do you recommend, and again do you have any good links for more info?

Thanks again, and so far it seems to be a great community! Keep the info comming, and I'll have a plan lined out by the weekend!

what i mean by OBDI conversion is swapping out your ECU (OBDII version 2) for a p28 ECU (civic vtec ecu), either with a custom chip or chipped with hondata. Once you have that and all the bolt ons, i would recommend the skunk2 intake manifold, and either skunk2 stage 1 cams or ITR cams + ITR valvesprings. With a good 2.5" exhaust system and all of this tuned with hondata, you can easily hit your goal.

First you should do is pick up an intake. Don't get AEM Short ram the fitment is horrible. Get a Comptech icebox setup using your stock intake arm or comptech's. then leave it stock until you have enough money for suspension and/or a turbo setup. Oh, almost forgot, make sure to get rid of those shitty tires and pick your self up a set of POTENZA's from TIRERACK.COM.

RSX-S + mods = sick car

Might not want to talk her out of it.

just slap on basic boltons... put a front lip and some nice rims on it. she'll love it.

Yeah, she's a good driver! I know what you all are saying about the RSX, I just still can't get over the way it looks. I like the newer A-Spec aero kits and things they have, but the car is still so 'bubbly'.

Also instead of going for a $300+ payment each month, I figure I could squeeze some excitement out of her car (which she loves dearly).

Anyway, thanks for all of the tips/opinions/info. I have started formulating a plan, and I will let you guys know what we decide!

i used to have a GSR, but now have a S2000...

anyway, for the intake, a 4" dryer hose from the airbox to the front works great...just put some holes in it in case of submersion! on a STOCK MOTOR GSR, I hammered 15 flat consistently (actual, UNcorrected times). I added a comptech header later...it fattens the midrange well.

I also had a full suspension...sway/tie bar from comptech as well as konis/h&R OEs. believe it or not, suspension mods make the car faster.

Koni Shocks (yellow)
Ground Control Coilovers
Any 16in or 17in wheel thats to your liking
Decent all season performance tires
(optional rear sway bar and Fr&R strut towwer bars)

AEM cold air Intake V2
Tanabe Hyper Racing Medallion Exhaust
Test pipe or High Flow Cat

Skunk2 Intake manifold
Skunk2 Stage 1 Cams
AEM Fuel Rail

You could also go with a wings west or OEM body kit depending on your taste.

This would be a decent daily driver with more get up and go than the typical GSR

Get a nice suspension! Then think about what you want to do with the motor, NA or Forced Induction!

Keep in mind when you get I/H/E you may want braking power because they will be very lacking (it was to me).

You'll understand when/if you get the parts.
