17's can be done, but if not done right with a proper suspension setup it looks like you are ready to do some serious off-roading. I prefer 15's but 16's are still cool in my book.

to each his own, i had 17s on my hatch with a h&r sports and had no problems at all, no rub at all.
I think after 17s is when you need to start moddifying

i've got 15" x 6.5 rotas with eibachs and i have had rubbing. if you're just tooling around then 17" would probably be okay with a stiffer suspension setup. if you're going to be racing through any corners you're gonna rub.

save the money from the big fancy wheels and get more power. You'll have a lot more fun with more power but what are you gonna do with big wheels besides stand in your driveway and stare at them saying wow, I just waisted my money. But if you want to get them then thats cool, to each their own.
Since the earlier civics are smaller in appearance compared to the newer ones I would say 15's or 16's will look good on the car as long as you have a decent drop. 17's will work but look a little big IMO. Good luck with your choice!
