Loose Steering- Pls help decipher alignment results
HI. I weas told that I might get more answers here from the Type-R forum, so here goes;
I have owned my 2000 Type R for almost 2 yrs now, but there is somthg that I can't figure out. Brief history; car on stock suspension/wheels, Falken Azenis with around 10k miles.
Problem Description:
1. Whenever I launch the car hard, car pulls alittle to the right side. However, car drives straight & steering doesn't shake when on smooth road even at high speed.
2. If I drive on uneven road, and let go of the steering, steering turns left and right, but more to the right side (I feel like it's excessive play, I have to hold steering when on uneven road to keep it from turning left & right). I did a search and someone said that this is normal for ITR on uneven roads, but I am not sure. I have not experienced this on other cars, incl accords with skinny tires or rx7 with wider tires.
I have had my front right wheel bearing replaced under warrranty to reduce a vibration/wobbling noise. My steering shudders when I brake very hard during high speed, but this is probably due to my uneven/warped rotors, so it should not be related to the problem above. Here are my most recent alignment results (specs in parenthesis)
Front Left, Front Right, (Spec)
Camber: -0.9, -1.4 (-1.5 to 0.5)
Caster: 1.0, 0.1 (0.2 to 2.2) <------------BAD
Toe: 0.01, 0.02 (-0.08 to 0.08)
SAI (whatevr this means): 11.7, 12.4
Included Angle: 10.8, 11.0
FRONT
Cross Camber: 0.5
Cross Caster: 0.9
Cross SAI: -0.8
Total Toe 0.03 (Specified Range -0.16 to 0.16)
__________________________________________________ __
Rear Left, Rear Right, (Spec)
Camber: -1.0, -1.3 (-2.0 to 0.0)
Toe: 0.16, 0.08 (0.04 to 0.16)
REAR
Cross Camber: 0.2
Total Toe 0.24 (Specified Range 0.08 to 0.32)
THrust Angle: .04
Front Right Caster is off, but was told is not adjustable. Is this the cause of the problem and how to fix? This is so annoying that I am ready to give up. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

So let's see:
You have more camber on the right side than the left side, in both the front and rear.
You have twice the toe out on the left rear than you do on the right rear.
You have a non-zero thrust angle.
Sounds the problem to me.

1. Car is fine; darty steering on uneven surfaces is normal.
2. My LCA is bent
3. Steering rack needs adjustment
4. Needs more front toe
5. cradle (??) needs adjustment
6. More camber on the right side than the left side, in both the front and rear.
Twice the toe out on the left rear than you do on the right rear. Non-zero thrust angle. All thse contribute to the problem.
I am not sure what this is, but I have a gut feeling its the toe. But then again, what do I know. If it is, can I have the alignmnet shop do this? I paid for the 3 yrs/unlimited alignment.

you're chasing phantoms. the only problem you have is that you are driving falken azenis on the street. the tire alone is very darty, regardless of vehicle. try a different set of tires. i bet all your problems will go away.

Wrong....his caster should NOT be almost zero on the right side....sounds like someone smacked a curb in that car. While the darty feeling may be contributed mostly by the tires/uneven surfaces, the suspension misalignment should still be fixed.

When I was driving Pirelli PZero's on the street, my car was super-uber darty. That was on 16's with not enough offset (38 vs. 50?). I almost drove into oncoming traffic once while taking hands off of the wheel for a moment and braking. (Whoops!)
I switched to a Kuhmo street tires that had a little more give and it's much different beast. Much happier to go in a straight line. Now I'm on a summer-only falken (ZIEX ZE-502?) and it's also not-darty (well, compared to those PZero's).
I agree with the tire-to-blame comment. My stock 1998 Type R has out-of-spec caster too, near 0, no accidents. It's the car. Drive with both hands until it's time for new tires!
Good luck,
Chris
1998 Type R 1085
EDIT: Car on Kuhmo (auto-x tire) or BFG G-Force tires on stock wheels is also NOT DARTY. Maybe you could borrow someone's front tires for a quick test??
