cleaning engine tips? (not bay, ENGINE)
well i've got practically all the parts I need for my d15b swap,
all sitting in my storage room downstairs,
but they be dirty,
I want to clean them but dont know where to start really.
any tips?
good products to use?
what to avoid?
What can I do to help clean the engines internals along with the outside?
Lots of grimey oil in there.
any tips appreciated!
thanks.

before i put my motor in , i cleaned it with brake cleaner. i sprayed everywhere i could on the motor. i then bought some 1200 degree high head aluminum paint and sprayed the whole motor in the front and the transmission, motor looks clean
...i'll see if i can find a pic

the valve cover makes a difference also. if you want, i can have it powder coated like that for you for 50 bucks. my brother in law does it at his work, so i get it done for free

i miss that set up

I've used oven cleaner on cold parts and it worked really, really well. Although, someone said it corrodes or weakens aluminum. I haven't had a problem.
Simple Green and soapy water and scrub brushes and wash mits:

Here's a picture of my old ITR tranny when I removed it in favor of a brand new one - note how clean the case is:

Here's brand new aluminum vs. clean aluminum from my 1998 engine block:

Brake clean is nice too, but unfortunately the **** sold in stores isn't nearly as nice as the liquid brake cleaner that you put in air pressurized cans. The aerosol can brake clean is ****, and I'd NEVER use carb cleaner to clean the engine. Carb cleaner will eat paint and **** rubber up to - not safe for engine cleaning if still in the car.
Again I believe Simple Green and soapy water is the ay to go - the results speak for themselves IMO.

I take my car to the carwash and open the hood and pressure wash that ****. If its really dirty, such as after swapping in a used engine, i'll stop in the parking lot while im cleaning the interior and spray engine degreaser on the block and ****.
dont spray the distributor directly and dont get your filter wet and you will have no problems. I've done it atleast 20 times with no problems whatsoever.

Hi,
thanks for all the responses!
so I think brake kleen is what I need.
funny I had a can of that stuff,
******* friends lost it.
oh well. I actually really like that stuff cuz it like autodries itself hella fast! works just like RC car motor cleaner, squirt it inside a mucky rc motor,
look in a minute later, no dirt and no moisture or residue left! just clean!

by the way,
I cleaned my engine bay the other day with simple green engine degreaser.
can it damage the paint in there?
got stuff really clean, but i'm worried about my paint.

oh one more thing!
is it ok to completely clean that hood latch mechanism?
it looked really coated in grease,
if it was there to keep the parts lubed, maybe I should keep it greased?
but if not, then i want to totally clean it.

from my experience with it, no it will not. simple green was developed under the assumption the engine would still be in the car. so as long as you follow the instructions, i cant see there being any problem with it at all!
My friend used it and it took some paint off in the engine bay. He sprayed the bay down w/ simple green, then took a rag and rubbed where the hard to get off dirt was, and where he rubbed is now gray from the simple green taking the paint off. I guess its better to dilute the simple green in some water before hand so its not as powerful.

so fresh and so clean clean
