Default Ecu question.

My girlfriend has a 98 ex. With the 98 ex ecu they have something that makes you have to keep the old headunit installed if you install an aftermarket one. I was wondering if putting the 99-00 ex ecu that does not need the stock headunit to still be attached work?

Would there be any forseen problems in doing this? Same motor. I think that the only difference is that 96-98 are obd2a and 99-00 is obd2b. Correct me if I am wrong.

what? what makes you think that, it's prolly just antitheft on the stock radio. either way you can aftermarket radio to work, since it doesn't need ECU to tell it what to do. Even if there is some trick **** that doesn't let you do it you can run new wires to make it work, since all it needs from the car is power, ground and antenna. But I highly doubt that it has something like that.

you should be ablt to put an aftermarket stereo in with no modifications whatsoever. The only cars I have heard of that have the integrated stereo are most of the new GM cars. Seems like a bad move on thier part to come up with this idea with no way around it when modifying cars it at an all time high.

obd2b ecu won't plug in or work with obd2a car (what you're trying to do). the thing with the radio on the 96-98 is that keyless entry doesn't work with factory radio removed...

edit: there's two plugs on back of radio. one's the radio and one's the keyless. plug the radio harness into new radio and leave stock radio behind dash. or just get bot radio and new alarm...

if you unplugh your stock radio. your will lose factory keyless entry if you have it, as well as your automatic domelight. if you plan on or already have aftermarket alarm. just jump two wires together on factory keyless plug (can't remember which two). and the dome light will work again. i belive the two colors are green/black and something. but even easier is to leave your stock radio plugged up and shove it behind the dash. just remove all the metal brackets first and pull the harness off the metal bracket in the dash to give yourself more room.
