Wrinkled surround = distortion?
ok here's the deal. Earlier this week, I bought a pair of MB Quart 6.5in coaxials for my Teg. While i was driving home, the sound didn't seem quite right, like it was distorted. SO when I get home, I popped off the grills to the rear speakers, and it seems as if they smashed about 2-3in worth of the surround. Would that have caused the massive distortion? Or did I just get duds?
TIA
TIA
Sorry, no pics.
I am 200% sure it was not due to too much power, because i am running them from my headunit, which only gives out 50w.
If anyone leaned into them, it was the installer, because i saw them before he put them in, and noone else but him and i were in that car before i noticed the problem, and I was only in the front before I took the grills off.
Now, as to the short, I have no idea, and don't have any good idea on how to check that.

Ok, this is my theory. I have a teg too and I know what it takes to replace the speakers on the rear. There are only two possibilities; nor you have to remove the whole side panel including grille and everything or you can do the install trough the opening when you remove the grille. To do the second option, it requires alot of skill to get a 6.5in trough the opening in order not to damage the speaker (MBQuart, in your case). If the installer was in a hurry or not on the mood, he could easily damage the cone or the sorround of the speaker while he pushed it in. Damage to these parts can cause distortion at any level. Just look for marks around it...

Ok, this happens at all volumes. At low volumes, the sound is VERY fuzzy and messed up. At higher volumes, the speaker sounds like it's trying to tear itself apart.
THey removed the whole panel to install the speaker, so that is not a possibility.
Will this be covered under the speakers' warranty?

sure, usually as long as the product is installed at an AUTHORIZED installer, you should be fine
where did you get it installed at?
i know i paid to have mine installed at circuit city so i could get their 4 year warranty..well worth it, had my speakers replaced twice for only 20 dollas at a time...beats droppin 100 for a new pair

If there is any damage to speaker surround or cone = distortion, return to install shop and have them replace them. check to see if speaker grill is doing the damage. hope this helps.94
I'm nearly sure that the grill did it, and they are no longer on. It seems as if the smashed surround deflected the cone, and now the cone is rubbing against the post that the tweeter is mounted on.

nope...his headunit isn't giving out more than 22 watts RMS - and if theres any clipping to be had - he'd have to be well past 2/3's max - even still if it blew from DC it won't damage the physical cone - at least not from a head.
