Hello to everyone,
I am a new member. I have just purchased a 1991 4 door accord. it's an automatic and overall in great shape. my question is to how much should the car jerk when switched from park into reverse or drive and what could be the cause.remedy?
thanks to everyone in advance

well if your at a complete stop in park going into gear u really shuldnt feel much of a jerk at all but however in your case, have you checked your trans fluid? if it doesnt look red or is too low that could imply your problem. i would try that before you go crazy and if thats the case just drain it and replace it. other wide turn ur wheel out and check your cv boots on ea. side to see if they are ripped and leaking grease, that will cost you a little more $$ to replace but not too bad...those diagnostics r easy and quick and a lot better than bangin out bucks for a trans rebuild or something of that nature..otherwise when driving how are the shifts??this could help diag. goodluck

My 93 is very similar when shifting. Also going down the road it hits every gear very hard. Have been driving this car for about 2 weeks straight and took my ranger out for the first time today. Never realized how smooth and refined my rangers tranny is compared to this accord.
Thanks guys for all the help. The deal went sour. Something was wrong with the car papers so no 1991 Accord for me this time although it was in perfect shape except for this jerk. I also have a subaru legacy and it shifts in and outof gear like a dream. It is also an automatic. I was just afraid it might be a symptom of a major tranny overhaul although the rest of the car was in great shape. it was regularly services by a honda dealer as well so I did have my doubts.
anyhow, thanks for all your help and advise.
best regards

the hard shifting of the 4th gen auto seems to be common. its like that in my 92 slushbox. it really only shifts hard between 1st and 2nd, the other 2 gears shift fairly smoothly.
i think honda designed their cars this way. i had a 94 auto accord first, and it used to drive a bit rough, i thought something was wrong with it, so i sold it and went to buy another one, when i realized most of them drive like that. i ended up buying a 5 spd, but when i read the manual, it said that it is designed to be "positive shifting", that is, you can 'feel' the shifts, and they do this to make the transmission have a longer lifespan.
