How hard to change out a tie rod on 89 civic hatch?
Since i got my new beater it has always had slack steering...i thought... well its prolly just old
Well after doing some maintenance seems the drivers tie rod is loose/broke.
Its got mild rust.. what curtails changing it?
Would it be wiser to find a newer steering rack and install? my buddy has access to a few wrecked crx's.
Thanx for any input.

There are 2 halves to a tie rod - the inner tie rod and outer tie rod.
The inner tie rod is found attached to the steering rack under a rubber boot. It really shouldn't go bad unless you tore the boot off.
The outer tie rod is easy to replace. It's attached to the steering knuckle and is screwed onto the inner tie rod. You should be able to have complete access to it by simply jacking up the car and removing the wheel.

Outer tie rods #18 and #20 (left and right side)
About $45 off http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com
They are held on with a castle nut a cotter pin.
They pop off the steering knuckle with a tap of a hammer once you get the nut and pin off. Then you need two big wrenches to seperate the inner rod from the outer. There is a jam nut (#32) that locks the outer tie rod in place. After that's loosened the outer tie rod unscrews.
