Default B16 Tranmission cleaning

Recently I was trying to clean off the exterior of my transmission after me and some friends pulled out my B16A1 from my CRX. I pulled the tranny off the engine for later use on another engine. Then I used some steel wole to get the dirt off the side just so I could get it down to the bare metal showing again. Unfortunetly, when I did this, I didn't cover the holes with anything and now I have metals strings from the steel wole all over inside these holes.

I talked to some people and was told that flushing the tranny a couple of times wouldn't do it and the whole thing is scrapped. Is there anything I can do to salvage it?

Magnets?

And if you do flush it, get some of those magnetic plugs?....

I dunno really, just kinda guessing, but I guess it'd be worth a try....
