Wheel + Tire opinions
I have some very nice 17" 19lb wheels on right now with horrible Toyo Proxes FZ4 tires. AutoX is death on these tires.
I'm debating if I should spring for some 16" wheels - either 11lb TE37s (can you justify the $$) or 16lb something else (like SSR TypeS or Motegi FF7) so I can put on the some 215/45/16 Azenis
OR
Just get some 205/40/17 ES100's or Kumho's....

Well you are in SM, right? So if you are just out there having fun then I suggest Kumhos: good grip, good wear (so I'm told), and not too expensive.
Any reason you are going with 15s? Big brakes er something?

hmm, what kind of car and class? 15" 12 lb wheels like the kosei's with the 205/50/15 azenis is a solid tire setup for street tire auto-x. may not be enough rubber for some of the heavier cars, but even my piggish lude handles better on the 205/50's than any other tire i've driven.
if you're in a class that allows r-comps, i'd suggest 15's and a 225/50/15 victoracer.

Can't do < 16" because of big brakes. Yes, SM class.
I'm not made out of money so I can't have two sets for street/racing. I thought everyone liked the ES100's better than the Kumho's. Which Kumho's are we talking about?

If you signature is correct about it having a 280whp GSR then 15"s might be too small for that much power. One consideration would be 235/45/17. You can get these to fit if you remove the fender lining and use about -3 degrees of camber.

hmm if you could afford the kumho's for your 17's, that may be the most economical way of satisfying your needs. (keep your wheels, have a decent tire). Running a 16" wheel will help cut down on weight, as well as give you more options in tire sizes for things like better gearing, so you could go with a 16" te37 or whatever lightweight wheel you'd like, and run the 215/45/16 azenis which will probably still outperform any tire within 20mm of it.
personally i don't think the ES 100 stands a chance in auto-x, since it's akin to driving on marshmallows.

saving a few pounds of weight wont really make a big difference compared to the benefits of width and stickiness.
My advice is to get the widest wheel you can afford, whether it be 16 or 17, and put Azenis on em...even if you have to go with wider wheels in the front than in the back.
As for which Kuhmo if they're referring to street tires (not victoracers), they probably mean the Ecsta MX....a very similar tire to the Azenis, but with a couple of different sizes...work with those two to get the best deal, but assume any Azenis tire counts as a one size wider than listed... they just do.

doh, yeah sorry, the kumho MX's.
Hankook comes out with a high performance street tire sometime later this year, which is exciting since they will offer more sizes than both kumho and falken.
