Default Dynoing questions

Hi,
I'd like to know how do they calibrate a dyno in the US when measure Honda (esp. with DOHC VTEC).
Few days ago there was a dyno day here and all DOHC VTEC Hondas were 30hp less than expected but non VTEC motors were OK.
Before they started dynoing they read the speed of the car on 4th gear and 2k rpms and this value was then used in a program to dyno a car. Were they guessing the gearing or so?

Maybe 30hp was the drivetrain loss? Did the sohc have any built engines?
