Default Test Drove a 90 CRX DX (automatic) and it died!

hey guys...i post more in the Integra forum, but i was looking at a 1990 CRX automatic yesterday. i love the car and want to buy it. as i was driving it the tachometer was going crazy (under normal acceleration and everything) didnt seem to have a loss of power either. so i took it onto the highway and punched it....it was missing like crazy! then died. so i coasted off the road and came to a stop. tried to start it and all it was doing was cranking. waited about 5 mins then fired it up...ran for 20secs...then died again. waited some more, fired up...i held it at 4K rpm and it sounded good. as soon as i took my foot off the gas it died again. i was just wondering could this problem be related ot the ignition coil due to the fact that the tach was going berzerk under normal driving conditions? i really want to buy this car and i wanna make sure im not buying a headache and hoping its more of some stupid electrical problem. i know the earlier civics and tegs have PGMFI (main) relay issues, could this be one too? again, this only hapened as soon as i floored it. the engine is the 1.5 FI motor (but you guys already know that). any information would be helpful. thanks in advance -Mark

i doubt it has ANYTHING to do with the transmission! the shifting was super smooth.

Why would you want an automatic dx? Just for a daily driver?

If youre looking to mod it at all just walk away, DPFI ->MPFI is hard enough, add an auto to manual swap and you coulda bought a nice shape Si

I cant get over the sunroof and the seats on the SI, so thats what Id be looking for

all it needs is a new distributer..

i say lowball because the car is screwed, grab a dist for the bone-yard and be on your way.

Damn people a CRX is a CRX is a CRX. Doesn't matter if its DX, Si, HF, auto or stick. I mean its not like later hondas where you have to cut and weld **** to convert to a stick. Its all bolt and go.

He's gotta point. Any CRX, A/T or otherwise, is better than just about any other comparable car you could find for the same money.

As the others mentioned, sounds like a distributor problem. I'd start by replacing the ignitor, then try the ignition coil.

DX and Si have the same seat, just with different headrests (closed vs. open) and different cloth.

Agree'd, a fidgety tach and harsh missing problem under load would point me at the ignitor as well.

Found out today it was a bad PGMFI (Main) Relay. would this too cause that tach to go nuts liek it was doing?

ok so i got the car today!! but it still has that problem, he changed the relay....so i guess its definately the ignitor?? or the coil?? i just wanna be 100% sure before i go start ripping it apart.

i would just replace the whole dist. with a brand spankin new from dist. king. my car did the exact same thing to me at a track in dallas forcing me to leave my car in front of a porno store on I-45. came back next day put in dist. and it's been fine ever since.

typically an ignitor is your problem area. i would put 5 bucks on ignitor, as a matter of fact i will send you 5 bucks if thats NOT the problem
