Default Stock Oil Cooler?

Where is the stock oil cooler located on the Type-R? and if I buy an aftermarket oil cooler (Earl's or Greddy) do I replace the stock one, or just add the new one on?

The stock Oil cooler is located between the oil filter and the engine block. It uses the engine cooling system to cool the oil via a oil-water heat exchanger.

Don't know much about aftermarket systems but at least now you know where it is.

most after market kits are air-to-air and will mount up to the OEM cooler.

Wouldn't oil-water be more efficient for that loctaion, since it doesn't get a whole liot of airflow...???

For that particluar location, the stock cooler is a good choice.
On one hand, you think "hey this thing sucks. all it does is transfer the heat from the oil back into my coolant"

but then again, realize that your coolant flows through your radiator, and that ALWAYS has air blowing through it.
i would think with the additional of some spoon or mugen cooling system upgrades, in a sense you will also make your oil temps lower due to this fact.

but seriously, nothing compares to a good, front mount 8 or 10 row cooler w/ 1/2" stainless lines. your system capacity goes up by 1/2 qt. if not more due to the size of the hoses and cooler.. and you can choose to mount your filter elsewhere.

word to the wise: the B&M kit is bunk. don't buy it unless you plan on replacing all the rubber hosing with stainless braided.

I was considering both cooling system upgrades and oil coolers/remote mounts. I can't imagine too much of a performance increase from these, more like protection and reduced wear. You could spend 1-2 grand upgrading both, C&R/Fluidyne radiator, oil cooler and filter remount kit, thermostat, etc. I decided to leave it alone, as my cooling system capacity I don't believe is met yet (temp gauge is the same driving on the street as it is after 20 laps on the road course).
Although, maybe that's not the most accurate gauge...

Basically - is it all really worth it?

ALSO-Anyone have any information on the electric water pumps/cooling systems?

I've heard of a few horror stories from people using a front mount oil cooler (air type) where they used lines which were too big (we Mike K pointed out should be 1/2') and it caused premature wear or something....not enough oil pressure and the engine started to machine itself to death.

I personally run a Mugen Thermostat, ARC rad cap and a Fluidyne Rad. No problems so far, but then again it isn't an accurate measurement of efficiency when all you stare at is the stock coolant temp gauge.

there is really no need for another oil cooler if your car is just daily driven only.
right guys? (unless you have extra money to spend)

Yes, I dun think we need aftermaket oil cooler to replace the stock cooler. Unless you race it.

Well I'm in the same mode of thought on this as you......
1) Don't rely on the stock (coolant) temperature gauge to judge the temperature of your oil. Install a separate oil temperature gauge if you are concerned about oil temperature at the track
2) Upgrade the radiator first and see the results. I think that the stock rad is too small (in both surface area and volume) for track use. Go with a Fluidyne (best bang for buck) or Spoon (if you have $$$$).
3) Monitor oil temp at the track using 1 & 2 and determine whether an additional oil cooler is necessary. If so - go with the Earl's oil cooler and braided SS lines.

Thanks Phat one. What is an ideal oil temperature- or water temp for that matter, I have no clue. Oil pressure as well......
