Clunking/knocking noise under load...
Hi guys. I did a bunch of searches on this and got it narrowed down to detonation, bad rod bearing or tranny problem (so I don't really have it narrowed down..). Anyways I hace a b16a w/CTR pistons and valvetrain/OBD1 converison tuned with hondata. When I let out the clutch in first I get a clunking noise for the first 1-2k rpms. Now if I'm in motion and I'm in the low RPM range and I give it gas I get that same clunking/pinging type noise. It goes away once I get above 3k RPM's.
Ok - now I thought that maybe I had some bad gas so today I filled with good 91 octane. (Can't get anything higher here). Noise is still there. I dynoed the car and didn't notice anything funny like I would with detonation. Spark plugs are black/burgundy. No white spots or anything.
Now - what could be causing this? My other friend with the exact same setup says he has this noise too. He doesn't seem to worried about it - but it is driving me nuts. Anyone else with this problem? Please respond.

I have a hatch doin kind of the same thing. It makes noise at low rpm's and goes away at higher rpm. Plus the higher the gear the less the noise. Anything after third, no noise. In my case it the transmission (main bearing or something). But also to add on to this, it is easily noticeable that the noise is from the tranny. To you does it sound like it coming from engine or tranny?
Sounds like the noise is coming from the engine. It is noticable in every gear at low RPM's. Like lets say I'm driving in 3rd at 4000 rpm's and i press on the throttle there is no noise. But if I shift to 4th or 5th (rpm's drop) and step on the throttle then the noise is there. I'm stumped...

So basically when you put a heavy "load" on the engine? I would pull the pan and check for metal particles. You may want to do this like...... ASAP!!!!! Don't junk an engine for 1 bad bearing.
