400 for a valve cover gasket , a tune up, and engine diagnostic?
so it wasnt my transmission and my car is not for sell anymore.
but is that a lil steep for valve cover gasket?
o yea to keep this accord related. its on my 91 accord ex.
the car was shaking when i shifted gears so i thought it was my transmission. took it in and they say it needs a tune up because the drivetrain is putting too much pressure on the weak engine. iono, i swore it was the trans. anyway they saying the engine is weak because the valve gasket flooded the plugs wit oil.

You could DIYeverything (unless can't do it yourself) for <200 dollars.
If you add in labor (60-80 bucks an hour) it would come in around 300-400.

so that price sounds about right?
i'm asking because these same guys tried to charge me $800 for a new distributor, then i brought one offline for $150 and did the job myself. so i think they might be shifty, but its a POPULAR mechanic spot wit tons of customers, i dont see why they would be ballooning prices and ****

IMO use your chiltons manual it (I believe) tells you everything needed for a tune up. Look at that and see if anything is out of your league as far as the valve cover gasket, if you can do the dizzy, you can do the gasket. I would tell them for just the tune up and diagnostic

wouldnt i have to do the gasket before the tune up tho? if **** is leaking out, ya know. doing the tune up might be point less

Well like I said it depends on what is wrong...usually a tune up includes:
seals, valves, compression, timing, wear of parts (belts, components etc).

For the record, I've got a 93 accord lx with the f22a1 and about 223k miles on it....as far as the valve cover gasket is concerned, you can save yourself tons of $$$...I replaced my valve cover gasket for <$50 in parts and promtly moved on with life. There are only 4 bolts/nuts/whatever-they're-called that hold the valve cover on, and it's almost self-explanitory just by looking at it. The one big gasket around the edge of the valve cover, and the rings to go around the spark plug chamber holes (I don't know what they're really called). Then once you've replaced that, you can replace the plugs, wires, distributor cap/rotor, etc for your tune up as necessary...
And FYI, when you replace the valve cover bolts, they are supposed to be torqued to 7 ft-lbs (84 in-lbs)...
