Default running rich for a long time bad for motor ?

In order to pass smog I need to get some new O2 sensors and a new cat. I found out that my engine (b18c1) has been running extremely rich for a while- like maybe 2 years or so. So is there a chance my motor my have been damaged due to this? I know that my motor has approximately 75k miles on it and has been turboed for a short period of time before. I hope It's able to still pass smog. I'm running 0BD1 even though its from a 98 GSR.

its better to run rich than lean. also if you flood the gas in the chamber itll leak into the oil destroying the oil and not protecting the engine like it should. other than that, no it wont kill ur motor.

Rich is safe for the engine. When your check engine light comes on, the ECU goes into "default" mode and runs the engine rich to reduce the chance of damage to it, but running extremely rich (like one cylinder not firing rich) will melt your cat... at least the insides.

If it's a '98-spec motor, wouldn't you need to switch to back to OBDII to pass?

Na. You just cut off the VIN and say its a 95 B18c1. They have to take your word for it. And so OBD1 it is. Its that easy. Anyway, thanks fellas

Must be the issue I'm going through...just had my high flow cat's inside start rattling around again. Best fix? gapping of plugs?

running too rich, you could washdown the cyl. walls. which would end up scratched. so yes too rich for too long could mean a bad motor for you.

Running rich will raise HC emissions, which is bad for US and the air we breathe.
But as far as the engine, besides what's already been mentioned, it could cause carbon build up inside combustion chambers and crankcase from incomplete combustion.
