Black Smoke
To my best guess it all started when i used some valvoline fuel system cleaner, I THINK. What happens is, there is alot of black smoke coming out the tail pipe. even at pritty low RPMs. Usualy when i floor it or it could be at higher RPMS. im not realy sure. on the subject of this, i might add, when i mat it, my motor makes like a girgling sound, not realy sure how to discribe it. Only mods i have is a AEM SRI and a lack of a mufler due to a straight pipe. Yes i have a cat and res, but pritty much no muffler. So what i wanna know is what could cuase this, and what are some steps to try and fix it. Other than those 2 mods if you will, its a bone stock 94 civic d15b7 motor with quite a few miles on it.

If it was bad rings or seals wouldn't it be smoking blue because of the oil blow-by?

Check the air filter too, could be dirty.
Did you re-fuel already? Since you used fuel additive to clean the fuel system, these could be the impurities or "dirt" trapped inyour fuel system. Consume the fuel you have in your tank and re-fuel and it shoud be normal afer a while.

Maybe your running rich. Black smoke=rich! If u know how to take off spark plugs go ahead and do that. It will take u about 3-4 minutes to take off one. Once u take it out check the end of the plug if u see like black residue well that means u are running rich. Does your ride consume lots off gas? Have u checked your timing? Changed spark plugs? Get your injectors cleaned by a proffesional or if your mechanically inclined u can clean them with acid. Clean your air filter like they said. Theres some others u can do i cant think right now im at work and i just want to go home. Home sweet home.....laters!
1. Pull the spark plugs, should take you about 2 minutes for all 4. Check all conditions of the plugs. Check for black/white/fouled/etc...
2. Check ignition wires. When is the last time they were replaced?
3. Check fuel filter for fuel flow.
4. Check timing with a timing gun and adjust.

check your sensors..
1. ECT
2. Air Intake Temp
3. MAP
4. O2
Check and make sure they are all within ranges and they are operating properly, they control fuel mixture, if one is bad that could be your problem. if they all check out i would try backprobing at the ECU.
you can check all of them with a DMM or if you have the resources i would use this

Or anything simular, but i DMM will work fine.
good luck!!
If you need any connector pinouts, i can get them for you.

It's your ECU...I had the same problem...idle like **** and run like ****..eats **** load of gas and carbon deposit of the chart, and smoking black carbon out the exhaust too. Plugs had carbon thick enough to scrap off in flakes..
....ECU..YEAP....I changed my ECU and it ran like new again....

Ya um, pulled my plugs, they look pritty damn nasty, have a look. Sorry for the very undetailed pic. Also, got some sea foam around here somewhere, should i try and clean them off some with that?

Most people with stock Honda motors (as myself) use OEM NGKs. The OEM NGK part # is NGK ZFR5F-11 which you can pick up at a local auto parts store for $8 for the 4. Get those, gap them correctly, work from there.
