about a couple weeks ago i began to notice that on my 1-2 and 2-3 shifts, i heard a chirping noise (almost exactly like a bird chirp, but louder) come from the engine bay when the shifter would seat in the higher gear. the noise has become much more noticable as of late--even my gf wondered what the noise was. any ideas of what this may be? early signs of my syncros about to poop out on me?

 

What kind of clutch do you have?

 

CM stage 1.

its a y7 tranny with 75k on it

 

could also be your intake i noticed a lot of people with short ram intakes have that same delema i have an aem cold air and doesnt make that noise at all

I've never heard of such a thing. How are your engine and tranny mounts and bushings?

 

Yeah, my short ram 'whistles', but not when I'm shifting, only when I'm accelerating. I hate it. So I just floor it so all I hear is the deep rumble.

 

i get a chirp from the front of my car when my a/c is on, if i rev the motor and watch the a/c pulley u can see the outer part of it stop and catch again when i let off the throttle. my friend said my a/c compressor is going bad.

 

i know its not the intake... it only makes the noise when i change gears... particularly when i engage the higher gear... i can be completely off the gas and have the clutch fully depressed and it will still make the noise.

 

is it the tires chirping????lol thats my guess.

 

Yeah...so did you check your engine and tranny mounts and bushings like I said?

 

when my clutch started making chirping noises, it was going out. i was at a red light and my car wouldn't move anymore. cheap *** hyper clutch.

 

its not tire chirp, or my clutch(i can still roast the tires, and chirp the tires going into 2nd)... i mean, i can hold the clutch to the floorboard while i shift (keep it pressed down) and it will still make the noise. i can't feel anything when it happens(in the shifter or my ***)


and no, i havent had a chance to check my mounts... its raining outside. how could my mounts affect that?

When you press the clutch you are removing all torque from the engine. When that happens the engine/tranny will shift (not gears). If you have a bad mount or bushings your engine/tranny isn't holding in place like it should, so it's shifting more than it should. It could be a metal on metal chirp. See what I'm saying.

I'm not saying this IS the problem. It's just a theory.

i understand what you're sayin. however, by the time i land in the higher gear, the tranny shouldnt be squirming around anymore from my taking the applied torque away.

i dunno... i'm prolly gonna fill my mounts with silicone or window weld here in the near future

Yeah...I see what you're saying as well. Maybe it's your shift linkage. It does this during the actual shift or when you land the gear before releasing the clutch?

have you tried pulling out of a gear w/o the clutch? The chirp could be your clutch is slipping... just pull out of a gear and go into neutral w/o the clutch... if it still chirps it's probably the mounts like stated above...

 

Maybe a belt loose, but would that really make a noise like that shifting...

 

Do you have poly shifter mounts? does it sound like a metal on metal squeak?

 

it makes the noise as the tranny seats into the next gear.... not while going through the syncros (like a grind would be).... and yes, it is before i let the clutch back out

 

have you tried running through the gears with the car off and just sitting there to see if the sound is still existant? It may be the shifter bushings or your something hitting your exhaust. Maybe put it on jack stands and have someone go throught the gears (with car off abviously) to see if you can see where it may be hitting something??
