Default $6000 - 2003 S2000 Theft recovery- Good idea to buy?

I was at my local salvage yard and I saw a yellow S2000 sitting with a tarp on it. I started looking at it and found that the car was missing the seats, doors, steering wheel, gauge cluster, radio, ECU, hood, trunk, front bumper, rear bumper, side skirts, taillights, headlights both fenders, and maybe the soft top I can't remember. It does have it s wheels, suspension, Full drive train. How much would do you suppose it cost to rebuild it. Using Factory parts Vs. Using all after-market? I do plan on using alot of after-market parts to keep some of the costs down. I do understand what I'm getting into so please don't tell me its a bad idea if i,ve never done this, ok?

if its just cosmetics then i'd say its a good buy. i'm sure you can find some used S2k seats, and find a decent bodykit. Its still gonna cost you a lot though.

good luck with it, keep us updated!

Yeah it just body parts, it sooo clean though. I do wonder being a theft recovery though, is did they race the sh*t out of it? 9000 RPM Clutch drops? I'm not sure, tires are new and look perfect and no damage to under side as for what I can see.

What does headlights and tails cost? I am afraid to ask.

Not sure this is a good investment for you at the moment. Expect to put in at least that much money, but closer to 10K to get it back in running order. I'm quite sure it would make a fantastic race car, but most likely, not ideal for street after you replace everything and have it painted or find it paintmatched.

You can inquire for parts at http://www.haprecycling.com - but the lights, rear and front... very expensive. seats? get em used, but watch out. heck, I even bought a set of seats at a premium in your neck of the woods but when they arrived, they were in far worse condition than I had expected - trashed and the latches don't hold, nor does the slider in one spot. horrible buy. I'd strangle the guy that sold them to me if he'd ever respond to any messages or calls. damn. okay /end rant.

Just know what you are getting into if you do this. But keep in mind, replacment parts aren't going to be cheap.

I do have a good grasp at whats involved or I would not even consider this. I was kinda planning to make it a weekend warrior and not my daily as I have my Ram for that. I figured that I would invest $8000 on top of the 6000 initial buy. I was going to see if I could get as many factory yellow parts to minimize paint costs. I know there may be I little difference but I see how it goes. I have to go back and take a serious inventory of what it needs before I go ahead with it.

hmmm, yellow. if you do have to paint it.. it's VERY difficult to get it to match. I wouldn't be too concerned about the condition of the clutch, etc. you could always tear down the car, sell the parts that are left if it is that bad to recoup some if not all or more of the money.

Seats - get something afermarket for ~1200-1500. two sparcos/recaros and mounting brackets, or stock used for 500-800.

Lights - get them used. new they run 900 for the fronts, and that is JUST the housing. yes, that's right, $450 each. rear's? no idea.

Trunklid - hmmmm. hap will have em.

Steeringwheel - hap, but better with aftermarket momo + adapter due to the airbag that is probably missing.

ECU - HAP or find someone that has upgraded to an AEM EMS or MOTEC and doesn't need the ECU at all. Most of the Spoon/Mugen ECU's require a core exchange.

hmm more later.

Dammit, I called the yard to ask if I could come look at it again closer and was told he had just sold it. $6500 cash, said he couldn't pass up the offer. Oh.. well time to keep looking. Thanks all for the tips.

Talked to owner and Its mine if I want. He a good guy.

Yeah the motor was still there with full complete drivetrain, wheels, suspension, dash... Just read my first post. How much do you think I could of parted it out for? All was in perfect shape.

Salvage yard owner is kinda a friend so I'm going to go there tonight and talk to him and get it from him. He fold.

Just got off the phone with Dave the owner of the yard, He says he sell it to me if I really want it. Not sure yet.... Parts are cheaper then I first thought. Good to know people.

he paid $6000 for it and had to dump $10,000 more to get it looking right.

i guess he came out ok. car had low miles.

Hey... it sounds like a good deal now but price the stuff first. I work at Honda and saw an S come in on just plain old break in. The seats were gone, tail lights, and a couple other small things....

THE COST WAS OVER $12,000 JUST FOR THAT.
BEWARE THE STUFF IS EXPENSIVE CALL YOUR LOCAL HONDA DEALER.
WHEN MY RIMS AND TIRES WERE JACKED THEY COST OVER $3500.00.
$6000.00 IS GOOD BUT ALL THE PARTS WILL ADD UP TO ABOUT THE PRICE OF A USED S2000. Maybe there are ways of finding used parts but I am betting it is hard.

I'd do it and go aftermarket. It's definately going to be cheaper. (Aftermarket wheels, steering wheel, seats, hood, trunk if theres a carbon fiber one) etc. Side skirts and fenders along with lighting I would aim to leave stock but I bet you could have yourself a sick looking s2k for 15 grand.

it may be a good deal if YOU drive it and don't mind the title.

with the salvage title, you won't make money selling it. figure 60% of the price of a clear title. you may get lucky, but don't count on it.

Theft recoveries make great all-out race cars and bad road/resale cars IMO. This is your chance to get racing seats, all the components that were stolen can be replaced with lighter ones now, etc, and be turned into a real race car. If you have the money to make this a towed racer then go for it otherwise, you might be able to part it out and still make some cash (engine, tranny, diff, wheels, top if its on there, mufflers, etc etc.)

I bought the car, I have decided that I am going to part this S2000. I have been offered serious cash for the drive train and other parts, and I stand to make a profit on this. I started out with the intentions of rebuilding it, but after hearing what people would give me for it parts I have changed my mind. I do plan on buying another S2000 if this works out as planned. Thanks for all of your insight.
