Any time I go on a road trip, I'll change the oil before going. That way I won't have to worry about it needing to be changed badly (3k miles or more overdue) halfway into the trip.

If I'm not staying for a long time where I'm going, then I'll just change it when I get back. When you're on the highway, you can get by longer without an oil change.

If I need to change it mid-stay, then I'll pack some tools.

I would say it depends on how long this long trip would be. And on which car...

Before and after. $15 and 15 minutes to do the most important thing for your car.

I change mine every 2k as well. It's cheap and easy. Piece of mind. Never had a problem.
