Sup fellow H-Ters..

just ran into some trouble... car is overheating , but its not like it overheats all the way and shuts donw.. actually i was driving in heavy traffic couple of days ago and the needle went almost 3/4 of the way... i turned the heater on and the needle dropped and drove home with out any problems... i thought it was low on coolant, but when i checked the coolant.. it was FULL...

now i am wondering whats wrong ? could it be that my car was low on oil ? coz when i chekced it... it was at the lower point... other than that my engine seems fine.. anyone faced such problems ? any help will be appriciated.d..... thankss for any help in advance

i need to get it fixed asap... today it was over half as well.. but then i was almost home so i parked my car... plz help me out guys.. thanks a million

Happend to my civic, would almost goto the point of full overhead on the gauge. I checked the coolant and it was within the min/max markers so I figured it couldn't be that. I thought it might be my electric fan... it was acting crazy but later on realized it wasn't anything. Bought a new thermo and then the whole problem stopped, didn't instal the new thermo, guess the car just had to be scared into working, have no clue wtf the deal was about. Drove from Chicago to Atlanta a few days later(with extra oil and coolant in trunk) and even the long drive with periods of going 115mph it didn't go near heating up.

k, heres some things you can check..

1) you already checked your coolant level, so thats good
2) check to make sure you dont have air in the coolant system. if it hits an air gap... then that lack of fluid would not go into your block/engine and cause a temporary overheating..
3) make sure you have no clogs in any of the hoses, no sharp bends/kinks in the lines
4) check thermastat to make sure its not gunked over..
5) also make sure your headgasket is in good condition, and not leaking.. cuz as weird as it might sound, it can cause your **** to overheat..
6) for ***** and giggles, flush out the whole system, cuz overtime, sediments can settle at the bottom of the radiator, and when the car starts up, can stir up these sediments and overtime, can clog the system/hoses/thermastat...
7) you got me, that's all the things i can think of.. maybe someone else can throw in there $.02 and give it a shot

good luck and bump

Well I'm assuming the system hasn't been flushed in a while. Do that, change the thermo and most of all make sure your fan is kicking on. 90% of the time it is because the fan fails. Might also be a good idea to change the water pump, and may as well do a timing belt . But if you are dirt poor. Check the fan first. You aren't losing coolant anywhere, thats a good sign.

but i still need help... how do i check the thermostat ? and where is it located ? sorry.. dont know

hmm i dont think there are any air bubbles in the radiator.. well its a guess but i shall chekc it tommrow for sure..

the only thing is that my OIL PAN GASKET was leaking... i took it to my mechanic .. he said it was a very small leak and i shouldnt worry about it...

do u guys think that might be the problem ?

also i need a tune up bad.. as i have put 70k on the car and only really had 1 major tune up... grrrr for me..

my dad also said it could be the water pump.. is there any way i can chekc it if its working ? if yes HOW ? sorry again.. dont know how to chekc the water pump..

lastly if i do get the water pump replaced how much should it cost and how much should i be willing to pay ? i have a good mechanic.. he is THAI and he fixes my cars for dirt cheap.. he actually only does CORVETTES now..but i know him since a long time so he doenst mind helping me out..

I think that it just needs a good flush, with new coolant for the summer and a new thermostat.

I believe that its located at the top of the upper radiator hose. It will be very easy to do since the coolant will already be out of the system.

Might not be a bad idea to get some new hoses while you are at it. And make sure that all the air is out of the system. It usually takes a while to get it all out. I just kept some extra coolant in the car and checked everyday for a few days.

Good luck

hmm im not so sure bout that one bro.. if its anything like my G2, which i think it is.. lol.. it should be right under your dizzy cap.. the upper radiator hose isnt anything to worry about. i had to find that out the hard way. i took it off and it was in a 0 shape instead of a O shape. but you'll see a rad. hose underneath the dizzy cap, and thats your bitch. you'll have to take off the intake pipe/tube to get better access to it, trust me, that helps alot.

also make sure you have a swivel socket when you go to put the bolt's back on.. and make sure you take your time on threading those on, because you DO NOT want to strip the threads on the bolt or the block. if you do, you'll be kinda screwed.

if you need a pic, i can get one for you tomarrow morning

sounds like you havent flushed it in a while... the properties of the coolant degrades over time so make sure you use a 50/50 coolant/water mixture. wouldnt hurt to have your thermostat replaced... they're like $20 or less.

bump.. here you go bro, i just took these on my cam phone, so sorry if the quality sucks ***

this picture is of the hose you dont wanna mess with in the front of the engine (the upper radiator hose) please excuse the stock header and the nut there with a hole through it, thats your air-pocket bleader.. might wanna try that too to get the air out of your system. keep your car running, and slowly turn it, just so some of it starts comming off, and dont worry, i did the same exact thing to mine, and no fluid sprayed out and burnt off my face, just be careful you dont get pulsy and turn the wrench too fast

heres a far shot of the area where the hose is located with thermo

heres a close up view of there the thermo is at. down slightly to the left of the dizzy cap. i pointed to it.. hopefully it helps you bro

You're going to give me change for these two cents..

My daily driver has seen better days, but it way overheating on the highway (90 degrees day) going 60. Whoa. So I flushed the system (It was nasty) and I noticed a problem. My radiator had this white hard stuff all over the inside of it. Ends up that someone who owned it previously didn't use distilled water. The minerals and calcium (the white stuff) boiled out of the water/coolant and built up on the fins on the inside of the radiator. I still use that radiator (because they want $150 for a replacement) but I still have problems with the car getting super duper hot when it sits and idles.

I've heard I can take the radiator to a radiator replacement shop and they can "Sonic Blast" the radiator free of the build-up for something like $35, but I haven't really called around other than two shops and the two shops had no idea what I was talking about.

Edit: Crud. I just realized you pinpointed your problem. I'm gonna leave the post though so if this gets searched in the future maybe my ghetto two cents will help someone.

Just flush that system out. The thermostat is located in that 3rd picture that was posted, just remove the hose and the bolts there and replace it. Make sure you have a new rubber gasket and don't pinch it when you put it back together. In the first picture you will notice a little nipple sticking out. That is for filling the system back up without worrying about air bubbles. Just open it up(it helps draining a little bit also because it releases what little vacuum pressure may occur) and when you fill it back up. Wait until water is spewing out of it and tighten it back up. Under yoru radiator there is a petcock valve to drain the system. Usually when the H2O pump goes out they start leaking water. There is a little seal in there that starts leaking to let you knwo it's time for a change. Change the timing belt if you are going to do that. Also Make sure your fan is kicking on.
