Reason for 3rd grind besides synros????
Figured I would post this in FI sinces there are alot of smart people in here.
I have allways had a small 3rd gear scratch that would more often then not occur when shifting above 7k. (2000 b18c1, ~30k miles, new Honda MTF)
Now after installing an ACT prolite flywheel, and Action 2KS clutch, the grind is really bad. Shifting into third above 5k results in a very nasty grind. All other gears perfect. Even If I shift extremely slowly from a redline shift from 2nd to third I get a nasty grind. Other then the grind I ABSOLUTLY LOVE the setup.
I can revmatch(or not revmatch) into third from forth or 5th at speeds above 60 and there is NO grind at all.
When we were doing the clutch job we went to install a rear mount insert, and it wouldn't fit because it appeared the rear mount was worn and crushed down some, not allowing the insert to fit.
Could the worn mount be causing the problems? Perhaps a shift linkage problem.
Looking for people with ACTUAL experience in this area, thanks.

I know once I changed fluid to Synchromesh and put in new rubber shift linkage bushings [I wish I would have bought the urethane ones] my grinds have gone completely away. The fresh bushings really helped.
SOMETIMES when you get the conversion the linkage gets bent in shipping not enouph to really notice but enouph to change the angle. You might try another set ??? Just a thought
Join the the club of the 3rd gear grind. syncros are you blame.
Put some GM syncromesh tranny fluid in and it will most likely solve the problem... It solved mine... 3rd use to grind.
Except when its really cold (10 degrees) out my car grinds going into 4th. After it warmed up for spring it stopped grinding 4th.

GM friction modified synchromesh part# 12377916 from the GM dealer should do the trick if not then you have other problems. Best 40 bucks I spent
I think it has to do with the tranny design that lets the 3rd synchro go out first. If you crack it open and look, 3rd is the farthest out on the mainshaft. It seems to be a little sloppier than the other gears even when fully rebuilt. My tranny is fine when it's cold out but when the fluid warms up and thins out is when it grinds.

GM Modified synchromesh will onlh help with small grinds. Didn't do anything for me.
Tranny rebuild in all our futures.....

Rebuilds aren't that bad. But I do think a dog box would be fun [not so much on a daily driver]. Be prepared to pay for a Honda dog box though...I've seen them and they are very expensive.

yea dog cut gears and slipper clutch on the street might not be the funnest thing in the world since you don't downshift, but yea might work if yo have a lot of stop signs and live in a place with no hills lol.
I would try easy stuff first, shifter bushings, and syncro mesh FM, usually helps out if you catch it early enough i swear by the stuff now.
Tranny rebuilds aren't that hard to do, just buy new detents when you pull the case damn things go flying

Try adding a little bit of Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer (http://www.lucasoil.com/Products_List.cfm) to your tranny fluid. They have it at all the Pep Boys, Autozone, etc. at the counters and it makes the oil kind of sticky. I added 1/2 qt. (+1.6 qts of regular 10w-30) to my 235,000 mile original tranny and it stopped my slight bearing noise and it shifts so much smoother. I never had any synchro problems before so I'm not sure how it would affect that but I'm sure it would help alot because then the oil would stick better to the gears. I would only recommend like 1/4 qt. in your tranny though because of the low mileage. It's worth a shot.
