Default How can I identify if a h22a engine at a breakers is closed deck and JDM

As the title says, is there any way to identify a closed deck JDM by visualally checking while the engine is still assembled, Im going down to buy one soon but don't want to walk away with an open deck engine. Cheers

An open deck engine would be newer, and better...and you probably won't find one anyway. Just read the production date off the stamps on the head. However on the back of the block there's a P13 stamp that should seal the deal, as well as a cast oil pan with a gasket.

But like I said they are probably all 4th gen closed deck motors

P13 = open decked motor?
What does a closed deck motor have stamped?

Joel Can you explain why you say an open deck engine would be better?

and what production dates were the Japanese h22a open & closed deck engines produced?

Sorry for all the questions but your post has confused me a little as to the way it is worded in responce to my qustion.
Its hard to tell what your reffering to when you said <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Satan &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">...However on the back of the block there's a P13 stamp that should seal the deal, as well as a cast oil pan with a gasket...</TD></TR></TABLE>

this is what the JDM engines have on them right?

But there is supposed to be Japanese open decked engines isnt there? so mix that with UK open and closed deck engines (?) and i might still have to waste a second journey 300+ miles to exchange it.

And why is a open deck engine better? because it is a newer product??

if not mistaken jdm has an h22a or h22 stamp on the block, anything after that ie h22a(1) means domestic. as far as jdm closed back or whatever i do not know.

I found some threads with pictures... They might help you get an idea of the differences between open a close deck..

If its stamped anything like H22a4.. thats an Open deck! That more than likely came from a 5th gen lude.

Check the DATES!!! If its dated befor like 96 or maybe 95, I am 97% sure close deck stopped at 96 not too sure though.. So if you read the dates and the HEAD has a date of like Sept 00 or some crap like that then you know its OPEN DECK..
I think the H22a "jdm" started in like 91 or 92.. USDM didn't start until 93..
Damn we are always a day late! We never get cool crap over here, Japan always be haven it like 3-4 years ahead of USA. LOL
ummm. UK I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT SO EVER!!!
I know if you can find a DOHC H23 VTEC thats a sweet motor! Only in the Euro type R Accords.!

cali get your facts straight...not all JDM engines are closed deck. What you think they made 5th gen motors open deck for USDM only??

You have to pay attention to the block stamps. Yes most used motors will be 4th gen models but 5th gen JDM H22a motors are also open deck.

And a well built open deck motor with pins/tabs is just as effective as a closed deck motor with boost.
