Tru Cool oil coolers and a few other oil cooler questions?

I've been looking into equipping the R with a decent oil cooler setup. I'm fixing to pull the engine to refresh just about everything (rings, bearings, new seals, pumps, etc.) and would like to keep my new investment protected during on track events, which I would like to start participating in pretty heavily. I live in the Southeast (Alabama to be exact) and from what I've been researching it is possible to see some very scary oil temperatures, especially given our 100+ degree track temps.
My questions:
1. Does anyone have any experience with Tru Cool units as found on http://www.racerpartswholesale.com ?
2. Isn't it possible to just run a sandwitch plate so that I can keep the stock filter location thus keeping the costs lower?
3. Does a sandwitch plate replace the stock oil cooler or just screw on top?
4. Is a oil thermostat required given my warm climate?

1. I have no info
2. You will hate yourself for trying. My B&M sandwich plate is in my closet right now because, yes the plate does fit, but there is no room for fittings after it is on. I used a permacool relocation plate (part# 116 I think). Moving the filter is nice, makes replacing it much simpler.
3. A sandwich plate screws onto the block, and then the filter screws onto it.
4. Probably not. I would include one if the R is your DD, just in case.
If you really want to try the B&M sandwich plate, I have one you could have for cheap.

I've used the B&M coolers before (which I believe are the exact same as the one your referring to.) It worked okay, but I much prefer Setrab or Mocal coolers. Noticed a good amount of difference when changing from the B&M to the Setrab.
IMO a thermostat is a waste when you live in a warm climate.

If it is hard to get to the fittings with the sandwich plate wouldn't it be just as hard with the filter relocaction plate? I thought it was basicallly the same as a sandwich plate without the oil filter adapter.
Another stupid question. What is AN? Is this just a standard of measurement or a certain type of fitting? It seems everyone uses AN fittings and I was just curious as to why.
Thanks for the information so far.

AN stands for Army Navy (that's who it was designed for), it's a standard of pipe fittings, and the number that comes after AN is the size of the fitting, in 1/16th of an inch. So AN -4 is 4/16".
everyone uses them, because everyone uses them...I think.
NPT = National Pipe Taper, btw.

The sandwich plates have to make room for the filter on the back of them, so the fittings have to exit out the side of the plate. This creats many problems as there is **** all for room there. It looks like a fitting will work but by the time you get the male/male on there is no room for the hose connection. There is the rear mount, some hoses, and fittings in the block that made this application impossible for me to figure out. Maybe I was using the wrong fittings, I don't know.
The permacool part # 116 has the fittings comming directly off the back of the part, not the side. Soooo much more room. And it's only ~$16 USD.

I see now. I just wanted less hassle by not having to relocate my filter, but no big deal if i have to.

Sorry for bring this back up but I need to ask you something.
I have an oil filter relocation kit from TD Performance Products(TRD-1158) The problem that I am facing is on the stock oil filter mount the fitting is too long. When I screw in the remote mount it does not screw in all the way cause the thread is too short on the remote mount.
Now will this Perma Part #116 work????
Since I see you have more experience on this matter then it would be a good idea for me to ask you first.
Thanks for your help in advance.

I have the Greddy Oil filter relo fitting unit with the B&W lines and oil cooler. It's lasted a 12hr and 6 races without any problems so far. '''knock on wood'''

it sounds like the b&m kit I originally had. I had to take out the nipple that the oil filter threads onto, and cut 1/2" off of it. But the permacool #116 works fine without cutting the nipple

Spend a few bucks more a get the Setrab (Actually Ordered mine today) or the Mocal. I broke 2 TruCools/B&Ms on my GT4 car due to vibration.
And 2-4 have been answered
