FMIC will require a welder that can do aluminim tig welding. Those machines can run an easy $1500 bucks.

MIG welding is the joe schmoe welds that you have done at a muffler shop but TIG welds are the ones that most manifold/dp/exhaust companies use on performance items.

I'm in the same boat as you. I don't know that much about welding and I'm contemplating about buying a nice welding machine. Check out http://www.fab-forum.com when you get a chance.

i had a miller syncrowave 350, but after a while noticed that running it in my garage wasnt the best idea. i then got a new lincoln presicion 185 tig, and have been pretty happy with it. paid ~$1700 for it shipped new, and welds everything from fmic's to 1/4 plate fine.

Miller Synchrowave 250SD seems to be the smallest TIG worth buying. When I say that, I mean quality and ability. $1200 plus tanks and regulator rental/purchase.

If you wanted a MIG, with an eye to portability... Hobart Handler 135. It's the Miller unit repackaged in a plastic housing at a discount. Also, I've had some very good luck with lightweight "crap" MIG welders by running quality wire through them. The **** wire at Homeboy Depot or Blowes has no place anywhere except a trashcan, drive the extra two miles to the welding shop.

Hey guy

thanks for the fast replys. So what ive gathered so far is that a MIG is not what im looking for ... right? OR is is just that MIG welds arent quite as nice.

MIG welds aren't quite as nice, and to do aluminum with them you need a $$$ spool gun. You can't push feed aluminum wire without birdsnests ever two minutes.
