Default Dunlop FM901's

Stupid Noob question here Sorry, still learning. Well, after the stock tires on the S2000 evaporated in 15,000 miles, my dad went to a local, independent performance auto shop to ask for tire opinions. They pointed him towards the Dunlop FM901's. Are these tires worth a crap? He claims they're a quality rubber; says there is a noticeable difference when driving. Personally, I think he's being biased, because he wants them to be an excellent tire. Anybody know the deal of these?

Don't know about those...but I'm running a set of Nitto's that I've gotten 23K out of and still have a few thousand left...very good tires imo

potenza S02's are great tires, i dont know if the FM901's will stack up, i've got them on my type R and they're not bad i guess, personally not as good as an AZENIS . . . i say go with Potenza S03's

if your lookin for high threadwear, performance tire at good cost, the fm-901 will do just that...
if your lookin for similar performance to the so2 without the price, kumho mx's are very nice
if you like the so2 but hate the low threadwear, s03 are the better choice...

Horrible tire. And if you are getting 23K out of them... eh, I seriously doubt that car handles any better than a Geo Metro. And nope, I'm not being sarcastic.

While anything can be considered "quality rubber", generally it isn't, especially in a sports car. They are rated at 200aa, which is relative to the brand. So, it is soft, but will get you a few miles more than the OEM S02's. wet weather traction should be much better than the OEM S02's, but the payoff, esp. with these tires is the sidewall. After a few thousand miles on these tires, you'll feel the rear end "bobble" back and forth. This is due to the weaker sidewalls. They are built that way for comfort and defining a limit to the tires.

Also, I will bet money they put 225's in the rear which is the wrong tire. It should be 245/45's, not 225's which is what the OEM S02 is sized at, but is labelled differently because it is an OEM spec'ed tire. A narrower tire in the rear will induce oversteer.

it's hard to beat the performance level of the stock so2's. If you care about that aspect of a tire, the "performance," then your best bet is to get another set of the so2's. Otherwise, if this is a daily commuter car where nothing more than wear and noise is priority, any tire will do but handling will not be the same.

The FM901 is an average tire at best. There are a number of better tires for the car. Take a look at the Yoko ES100 and the new Fuzion ZRI and the Bridgestone RE750. YOU would also want to go with the 205/55R16 front and 245/45R16 rear in aftermarket tires. This will keep the contact patch the same as stock.
If I can help let me know.

Jim

Yup, I would highly recommend Kumho Ecsta MX if another set of S02 or S03s aren't in your budget. I went with the MX and I love them. They are definitely the same or equal to the OEM S02 performance-wise with better treadwear. My next set might be either be the same or S03.

Have you even driven an S2000 on these tires? or are you just spouting? I've got no performance issues with the set of Nittos I run and they have handled every bit as well as the stock S02s. Don't spout unless you have actually ran the tire on your car.

I have to agree!
Not sure why the S0-2 is labled as a 225 when in actuality the thread with is 245..?

But with any aftermarket tire for an S200, if you are remounting on a stock rim a 245/45 is the correct size.

on MY car no, on someone else's S locally... yes. I was expecting the same quality as an AVS Sport (which is actually far less than an AVSi for the dollar) and it ended up being less than desirable, mainly due to sidewall and dry grip overall.

yea, the OEM S02 is about a 250 if such a tire existed. It is just an OEM spec tire.

Tangent story - a buddy of mine had his tires swapped out, and they did the wrong sized tires. I asked to speak to the tire when he wanted them changed out and the tire guy insisted the size was THE RIGHT size. I told him I have a spare set of OEM S02's in my living room (at the time I did) and wanted to know if I should bring them up to prove him wrong. He didn't budge on that one, but did replace the two rears with the correct sizing after arguing with his manager for a while.

What series Nitto was the guy running? just curious to see if they are the same as mine (450NT I believe). I am looking into Nitto Neo-Gens because they are supposed to be a better wet traction tire. If that is what he was running and it sucks let me know so I stay away from them...
